Description

COACH HOUSE WITH HORSE STABLE AND COACHMAN'S DWELLING belonging to the country estate Huis Oolde. At the beginning of the drive stands the coach house with stable and dwelling, with the ridge perpendicular to the drive, built in 1871 according to a design by architect L.H. Eberson on commission of Countess Van Wassenaer-Starrenburg-Van Rechteren-Limpurg (see façade stone). Against the left side façade of the coach house is a modern, single-storey extension which is considered of secondary importance for protection. The brick building on a composite ground plan consists of two parallel, rectangular building sections: on the left a substantial building volume (coach house and servants' dwelling) of one high storey and an attic storey under a gabled roof covered with glazed Dutch tiles between gable ends, and on the right a smaller building volume (horse stable) of one storey under a gabled roof covered with glazed pantiles between stepped gables. The facades built in stretcher bond possess a rendered plinth; the façade openings have Tudor arch closings. The façades of the coach house are provided with rendered, ashlar quoins and a drip moulding approximately at the height of the middle of the first floor; the gable ends have a rendered ascending dentil frieze along the roof edge and are capped at the top by a cemented ridge tile. The front façade is on the ground floor provided with rendered ashlar with a medallion in the centre, in which two large, Tudor arch-shaped door openings in a brick surround are cut out. In the openings are double cramped wooden carriage doors fitted with door knockers in the form of a lion's head, the upper parts of the doors contain panes with moulded glazing bars. In the gable end a framed Tudor arch-shaped hay hoist. The rear façade has on the ground floor three Tudor arch-shaped closed windows, the middle one of which is set in a rendered and painted surround with a coat of arms at the top; the window arrangement on the floor has been altered. Against the right side façade of the coach house stands the horse stable with facades built in stretcher bond with rendered plinth; the steps of the stepped gables are closed by a rendered capping and wrought-iron ornamentation at the top. The front façade has on the ground floor a recessed field with two coupled arches within which two Tudor arch-shaped sash windows are placed; in the stepped gable a medallion with stone bust of a horse's head, above it a cast-iron ornamental wall anchor. The INTERIOR of the coach house (excluding the dwelling) and the stable is still original; in the coach house the original roof truss structure (pointed arch truss) from the construction period, a water pump against a tiled wall (on the left), a wooden cupboard against the rear wall and a sliding door to the stable.
