Omschrijving
De Wiel 22
Inleiding

Description
De Wiel 22
Introduction
The core of this former DWELLING HOUSE dates from the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1868 it was converted into a school in Neo-Renaissance style. The Wilhelmina School remained until 1900, thereafter it was converted by architect J.B. Kam into a factory school of the firm Van Vlissingen. In 1922 it was changed at the commission of the municipality, owner since 1919, into a gatehouse by J.W. Hanrath. The gateway provides access to the park around the castle protected by the State. The building now functions as office and meeting space.
Description
The two-storey building comprises three bays with central risalit, in which a gateway on the ground floor and has a hipped roof with Tuile du-Nord tiles and flat sections. The rear facade is flat, whereby the whole has a T-shaped plan. The ground floor is constructed of machine-made brick with roll courses around the round arches and hardstone cornice lines and setting stones. The central arch is lower than those at the sides.
The remaining facade sections are of red handmade brick, which is alternated by dark brick ashlar courses and yellow decorative mortar bands. In the risalit on the first floor a narrow sash window beneath segmental arch is placed and in the stepped spout gable section above a round arch window. In the side sections a coupled sash window, beneath segmental arch with arch filling. Above this a four-pane dormer window beneath gabled roof. Beneath the drip moulding a dentil band and a brick-tooth band.
The arch construction of the passage is covered with hanging cupola vaults of yellow brick, resting on red brick piers and arches with natural stone intermediate pieces and setting blocks. In a two-storey extension beneath a flat roof is located a panel door with cast-iron ornamental grille from circa 1900, with fanlight.
The flat rear facade, which faces the park, also has three gateways, the central one lower than the others. The brickwork is the same as in the front facade. On the storey two coupled sash windows beneath segmental arch and two dormer windows beneath gabled roof.
Valuation
The gatehouse is of general interest. It has cultural-historical values as an example of the socio-economic development of Helmond as an industrial city, which is strikingly expressed in the successive uses and the building history of the property. It has architectural-historical value as an example of the Neo-Renaissance style and also for the work of architects Kam and Hanrath. It has ensemble values because of the relationship to the already protected castle and the castle park surrounding it. It has been preserved in good condition and is rare as a gatehouse with a complicated building history.
