Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The ST. LUCIAKERK was built in 1896 in Neo-Gothic style according to a design by architect C. Franssen. The church of the then new parish Mierlo-Hout was remodelled in 1930 and 1934. In 1930 a new sacristy and three chapels for children were added, in 1934 two church portals were built on either side of the main entrance. The original polychromy of the interior has disappeared.
Description
The three-aisled cruciform basilica has five bays behind the west tower, a transept with a roof turret and a choir of two bays with three-sided closure with ambulatory and side chapels. The ambulatory is provided with flying buttresses. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick. Plinths and decorative elements are of ashlar stone, the tracery in brick. The gabled, lean-to and hipped roofs are covered with slate in Maas-bond, as is the octagonal needle spire of the tower and the open-worked roof turret with trefoils. The west facade has buttresses with bead moulding and plinth. At the square tower there are on the corners elongated pointed arch niches, ending in natural stone pinnacles. The tower consists of four storeys, indicated by ashlar stone string courses. In the first storey is a pointed arch portal with archivolts and two brick columns. On the gable top is a cross flower placed. The wing doors have a natural stone lintel and a fanlight with climbing pointed arch tracery. Apart from the mentioned main entrance there are two side entrances. In the second storey there is on the front a four-part high pointed arch window with three roses.
The broad underdorpel is of natural stone. The third storey has three pointed arch niches with windows, supported by brick subsidiary columns. The fourth storey is divided in two. Between two natural stone lists is a narrow list with niches and a square clock face with clock mechanism. Above this a double pointed arch with sound holes. The brickwork ends with an ornamental list in relief brickwork and a parapet with pointed arch motifs.
The sides of the tower are executed similarly, but there is also a five-sided stair turret up to and including the third storey.
The tower spire is provided with small roof windows and a gilded wrought cross.
The side and rear facades have brick buttresses with plinth.
Between these are in the side aisles double pointed arch windows, which are provided with brick ornamental lists. Rich brick ornamental lists are also to be found under the drip moulds. The windows of the nave are triple windows.
Similar windows are also applied in the transept and in the ambulatory. The end walls and gable tops of the transept are richly detailed. On the ground floor there is an ornamental buttress with pointed arch windows on either side. Subsequently a large rose window with natural stone ring, around which eight trefoils radiate. Around the rose in the spandrels are trefoils. The gable top is provided with climbing pointed arch niches with a few small rectangular windows. In the roof plane of the nave and the equally high transept and choir are small roof chapels under constricted roof with gilt copper weathervane.
The choir and the adjoining chapels achieve a picturesque effect through their differing roofs and ridge heights. The arrangement is almost entirely symmetrical.
Above the ambulatory under lean-to roof rise the six flying buttresses with bead moulding in the buttress part and plinth. In the angle of ambulatory and transept there is on both sides a chapel under a high tent roof. Behind this is a lower polygonal chapel with its corresponding roof. In the north facade between both chapels a small stair turret with spire has been added. Between these chapels and the sacristy, which is situated in the longitudinal axis of the church, there is a single-storey part under flat roof. The five-sided sacristy has a wrought chimney and simple pointed arch windows as in the side chapels.
Nave and side aisles, choir and ambulatory have round brick columns with oak-leaf capitals. The walls are painted white. The transverse arches are pointed arch-shaped. Above the transverse arches a pseudo-triforium of four pointed arch niches with small columns. Between these triple corbels with leaf capitals. The brick vaults are cross-rib vaults, in the side chapels one finds star vaults.
The crossing piers are executed as bundle piers. The church furnishings include, among others, the richly wrought Neo-Gothic high altar from 1897, made by the Lennaerts family from Roermond. Of importance are also the Stations of the Cross, which Emmanuel Perey painted in 1906.
Valuation
The church is of general importance. The building is of cultural-historical importance as an example of the development of Catholicism in the late nineteenth century, in particular the establishment of church villages in the vicinity of industrial centres. It has architectural-historical importance as a good and representative example of the late application of Neo-Gothic motifs in the work of C. Franssen. It has been well preserved.
