Introduction

The CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY was designed by the architect A. Margry in Neo-Byzantine style. Jos. Margry took over the work. In 1914-1915 the presbytery and the two transept arms were built, in 1925 the completion of the church followed. In 1957 the presbytery was altered.

Description

The three-aisle cruciform basilica has a porch flanked by a high and a low tower, a crossing and a rounded closed apse flanked by two towers. The nave comprises five bays. The facades are built of machine-made brick and articulated by spandrels with ascending and straight arch friezes. The tower and the side and rear facades have brick buttresses with offset and chamfering. The offsets of the buttresses and the windows are of natural stone. The gabled, lean-to and dome roofs are covered with slates in Maas bond. The high square tower on the north-western corner consists of three storeys. In the first storey is found on the front a round-arched portal. This has, like the portals in the porch, a framing of brick colonettes. The round-arched fanlight has brick tracery. Above it is a narrow tall round-arched window. This, like the other windows, is filled with stained glass. The second storey is separated at top and bottom from the rest by a broad drip moulding. In a round-arched spandrel is incorporated a tall narrow round-arched window and a round clock face. The upper storey is low and has three coupled round arches with sound openings, beneath the moulded cornice is a narrow round-arch frieze applied. On the high inclined bell-shaped spire stands an ornamental cross. To the right of the tower is a gable with a porch in front of it with three round-arched wing doors with ornamental fittings. In the round-arched fanlights again brick tracery. The middle door is closed by a gable with cross. The lower doors close by means of a lean-to roof onto the central nave. In the masonry thereof is placed a wheel window with a brick decorative moulding. Below it a series of six coupled round arches. In the gable with ascending round-arch frieze is a small round-arched window. On the south-western corner stands the low octagonal tower.

This has in the first storey a half-round projection and subsequently a step-shaped tapering. In the second storey stand on the four corners narrow tall round-arched windows. In the third storey are basket-arched spandrels applied with corner columns: in the fields small round-arched windows. On the low bell-shaped spire stands a weathercock.

The side aisles possess broad round-arched windows in the side aisles under lean-to roof. In the clerestory are narrow round-arched triplet windows. In the roof planes are roof dormers with half-hipped and gabled rooflets placed. On the sides of the octagonal crossing are three coupled round-arched windows with partial shafts. Subsequently a narrower band with round-arch frieze, in which the dome is incorporated. In four of the sides are half-round roof windows. On the dome stands a lantern with bell-shaped roof with orb and cross. The transepts are half-round closed. The lower part is blind, above stand five round-arched windows, a round-arch frieze and a conical roof with orb-and-spike finial. The apse is separated from the crossing by one bay. On both sides of the apse stands an octagonal tower. The masonry thereof is left virtually blind. In the upper narrow part are segment-shaped spandrels applied with corner columns: in the fields narrow round-arched windows. The towers are crowned by a bell-shaped spire with orb-and-spike finial.

The central nave and the side aisles have internally brick barrel vaults. The transept and dome vaults are plastered. In the presbytery are stained-glass windows from c. 1915 with scenes from the life of Mary. Here also is the high altar in Neo-Byzantine style.

J. Margry designed the Mary altar around 1925. It is executed in marble and sandstone and richly sculptured. This applies also to the side altar for St. Anthony of Padua designed by Margry in the same period. Around that time the sandstone Pietà group was also placed. The Van Asten family donated in 1925-1926 a white marble statue of St. Theresa of Lisieux. The stations of the cross are carved in sandstone and were designed in 1933-1935 by Margry.
