Inleiding

Jozefgaarde" uitgehouwen.

Introduction

CONVENT, built in 1923 to the design of architect Wolter te Riele. The convent St. Jozefgaarde currently functions as a residential house.

Description

The detached two-storeyed cellaraged building has seven window axes and a hipped roof with broad overhang and red improved Dutch tiles. The building stands at an angle to the road axis and corresponds through this location with the former parsonage at the Bakelsedijk 1.

The front facade is dominated by a large rectangular projection across both storeys. This section is covered by its own hipped roof with terracotta ball finials. To the right behind the building are two extensions from the period of construction, including the chapel.

The facade is built of brown machine-made brick, with window hoods below the windows. The cellar windows have a division into small glazing bars. They are shielded by means of theft bars. The windows of the main floor and the storey above are respectively fifteen and twelve-pane sash windows. The window sills and keystones are of natural stone. A straight hardstone step with seven treads provides access to the centrally placed double doors in a portico. The door is provided with an iron decorative grille. The fanlight of the door is provided with almond-shaped carved forms. The framing of the portico and the lintel in architrave form are executed in natural stone. In the lintel is carved the name "St. Jozefgaarde". Above the door is a window placed as a cross window variant, the other windows next to the portico and above this are executed as ten-pane sash windows. The drip moulding rests on moulded horizontal consoles with a dentil band. In the roof of the projection and on either side of it are dormer windows with casement windows in small glazing bar division and a flat roof. On the remaining sides of the roof are identical dormer windows. On the roof ridge points are brick chimneys with natural stone corner blocks placed. The right and left side facades of the main building have three window axes. On the right is in the middle a panelled door in a round-arch portico.

Above this is an oriel with angled sides, which aligns with the drip moulding. On the other side is an identical projection.

The interior contains the original black/white floor tiling and wall panelling in yellow and blue-green. Many windows are provided with geometric leaded glass. This also applies to the chapel. The rectangular chapel is extremely simple and has been entirely newly fitted out. The doors have wooden ornamental framing. In the right part of the building is a granito staircase with an iron handrail. This handrail is decorated with diamond shapes and oval forms. The oriel sections of the side facade are built as a playful ending of the long wide corridor which, as on the main floor, runs through the building lengthwise.

The cellar floor is at stage height, as is the storey under the roof. The pine roof truss structure of the loft above is particularly robustly executed with thick beams and extra bracing with metal clamps.

The grounds are enclosed by an iron fence with almond-shaped decoration, from the period of construction.

Valuation

The former convent from 1923 is of general importance. The building has cultural historical values as an example of the development of Catholicism and the dominant place of the parochial centre in the Interwar period in an industrial city. The whole is also of architectural historical importance as an example of the variation in styles that the architect employed depending on the character of the building, it is also of importance as an example of the work of architect Te Riele. The building has ensemble values as part of the entire complex. The whole has been well preserved and is as an example of the alternation of styles in the work of the architect extremely rare.
