Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The H. JOZEFKERK was built to the design of architect Lambert de Vries in late Neo-Gothic style. In 1922 the choir and three bays were built, in 1926 two further bays and the foundation of the tower followed. In 1927 the tower itself was finally built. In 1978 a renovation took place. As part of this, the interior was divided into three compartments by walls.
Description
The three-aisled basilical church of five bays has a west tower, a non-projecting transept and an apse with three-sided closure. The facades of the church are constructed of machine-made brick, provided with broad decorative brickwork bands beneath the drip mouldings. The gabled and hipped roofs are covered with red improved Dutch tiles. The octagonal tower spire has slates in Dutch bond.
The square tower consists of three storeys. In the first is the entrance portal with double doors. Above this an image of St. Joseph has been placed. In the second storey are blind pointed arches with forked tracery, in which sound holes are incorporated. This storey is finished by a round-arch frieze. The upper narrow storey transitions from a square to an octagonal plan and has brick reinforcements at the corners and round-arched openings. In the octagonal tower spire are on four corners small roof windows under gabled roofs. On the tower a worked cross.
The side and rear facades are articulated by means of buttresses with setoffs that are clad with red tiles. Between these are the pointed arch windows with heavy brick forked tracery and plain leaded glass. The windows in the transept are taller and are flanked by lower pointed arch windows. Above this is diamond-shaped decorative brickwork. On the north-east side a sacristy has been added with its own hipped roof.
A heavy entrance door with ornamental fittings, a paired segmental fanlight and pointed arch niches with barred small rectangular windows divide the square building. In the roof dormer windows with four-pane chevron arch windows under gabled roofs are placed, similar to those found in the roof of the church. The church is internally articulated by brick pillars and pointed arches. The reticulated brick cross-ribbed vaults are plastered and painted white. In the choir stands the high altar from 1923. The polychrome wooden altar was made by P. Schneider Eslohe, Westphalia and contains amongst other things scenes from the life of St. Joseph. From the same workshop are the two oak confessionals with figurative representations. Also from 1921 by Schneider are six reliefs of St. Anne, St. Joachim, the coronation of Mary and three concerning St. Anthony.
The stations of the cross on canvas were painted in 1922 in the workshop of Conrad Martinez in Ortisei after a stations of the cross by Redemptorist Brother Schmalzel. Furthermore the church contains many wooden saint figures from various workshops. The church has been partially renovated internally and provided with an intermediate floor and a space for parish activities. In this process the spatial effect of the western part was altered, but the characteristic image of the nave with choir and transepts remained maintained and recognizable.
Valuation
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural historical values as an example of the development of Catholicism and the dominant place of the parochial centre in the Interwar period in an industrial city. The whole is also of architectural historical importance as an example of the variation in styles that the architect employed depending on the character of the building, it is also of importance as an example of the work of architect de Vries, in particular the way in which he created space within traditional Gothic forms for the type of the people's church. The building has ensemble values as part of the entire complex. The whole has been well preserved and is as an example of the alternation of styles in the work of the architect extremely rare.
