Inleiding
PASTORIE, gebouwd in 1923 naar ontwerp van architect Lambert de Vries. De St. Jozefpastorie werd gebouwd in Um 1800 stijl ten dienste van de vrijwel gelijktijdige gebouwde eveneens beschermde St. Jozefkerk aan de Tolpost 1. Heden vervult het pand een kantoorfunctie.
Omschrijving
Het vrijstaande tweelaagse pand heeft zeven vensterassen en een schilddak met breed overstek en rode verbeterde Hollandse dakpannen. Het pand staat schuin op de as van de weg en correspondeert door deze locatie met het eveneens beschermde voormalige klooster St. Jozefgaarde.
De voorgevel wordt gedomineerd door een driezijdige uitbouw over beide bouwlagen. Dit deel wordt afgedekt door een dak met terracotta bolpiron. De gevel bestaat uit bruine machinale baksteen met blokken rondom de geverniste voordeur en op de hoeken. Naast de deur staan lage baksteen blokken met natuursteen afdekplaat. Op de begane grond vindt men vijftienruits, op de verdieping twaalfruits vensters. De vensters hebben tufsteen dorpels en sluitsteen. Onder de dorpels is het metselwerk in reliëf uitgevoerd. De ramen zijn voorzien van louvreluiken. De gootlijst rust op geprofileerde horizontale klossen, tevens is er een tandlijst. Aan weerskanten van het dak van de uitbouw bevindt zich een dakkapel met openslaande ramen in kleine roedenverdeling en een driehoekig fronton. Op de overige zijden van het dak bevinden zich identieke dakkapellen. Op de nokpunten van het dak en rechts achter zijn baksteen schoorstenen geplaatst. Het terrein wordt afgesloten door een ijzeren hek uit de bouwtijd, aan de bovenzijde voorzien van ruitvormen.
Waardering
De pastorie is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als uiting van de ontwikkeling van het Katholicisme en de dominantie van het parochieel centrum in de industriestad in het Interbellum. Het geheel is tevens van architectuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de variatie in stijlen die de architect toepaste afhankelijk van het karakter van het gebouw, het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van het traditionalistische werk van de architect de Vries. Het gebouw heeft ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van het nabijgelegen voormalige klooster en de Sint Jozefkerk. The detached two-storey building has seven window bays and a hipped roof with broad eaves and red improved Dutch roof tiles. The building stands at an angle to the road axis and corresponds through this location with the likewise protected former cloister St. Joseph's Yard.
The front facade is dominated by a three-sided projection over both storeys. This section is covered by a roof with terracotta bull's-eye tiles. The facade consists of brown machine-made brick with blocks around the glazed front door and at the corners. Next to the door stand low brick blocks with natural stone coping. On the ground floor one finds fifteen-pane windows, on the first floor twelve-pane windows. The windows have tufa lintels and keystones. Below the lintels the masonry is executed in relief. The windows are provided with louvre shutters. The gutter cornice rests on moulded horizontal brackets, and there is also a dentil course. On either side of the projection roof is a dormer with casement windows in small glazing bars and a triangular pediment. On the remaining sides of the roof are identical dormers. At the ridge points of the roof and right at the rear are brick chimneys placed. The site is enclosed by an iron fence from the time of construction, fitted at the top with rhombus forms.
Evaluation
The parsonage is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical values as an expression of the development of Catholicism and the dominance of the parochial centre in the industrial city in the Interwar period. The whole is also of architectural-historical significance as an example of the variety in styles which the architect applied depending on the character of the building, it is also of interest as an example of the traditionalist work of architect de Vries.
