Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former JUNIOR SEMINARY and mission house, built in 1929 on behalf of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The expressionistic building was designed by architect G. Deur. The building has served as a school since the nineteen-sixties, to which it was extended at the rear and internally refurbished in 1992. It is situated on a large plot of land with a long access drive lined with beeches at a considerable distance from the road.
Description
The three-storey elongated articulated building has a staggered T-shaped floor plan. The facades are asymmetrically arranged and are constructed of machine-made brick with ornamental brickwork in relief. The various building components have hipped and gabled roofs with red improved Dutch roof tiles. The front facade consists of three parts; on the left the classrooms, approximately in the middle the domed tower with stairwell and on the right a few more rooms and at the far top right the chapel.
The left section has below the cornice a strip with narrow windows provided with horizontal glazing bars. Below this is a broadly extended section and provided with its own hipped roof, slightly offset from the centre. On the ground floor there are composite six-pane windows, on the storey composite nine-pane windows. The lower windows can be opened outwards. On the left an separate entrance is incorporated in this section, emphasised in the brickwork above it with vertical strips of leaded glass. The glazed door has narrow windows and a concrete canopy.
To the left of this two large windows and on the right on the ground floor the main entrance with a narrow series of windows. The entrance is reached via a flight of steps. The glazed door has small windows, cross-shaped decorations and a concrete canopy, which is wedged between the extension and the tower section. At the entrance are various granite ornamental blocks. Beside the door small windows, as well as in the side sections next to it. In the porch on the left a facade stone is placed, provided with the Chiro emblem, Alpha and Omega and the text; "For Christ the immortal King of the Ages / For Whom the martyrs bore witness through their Blood / Witness this Juvenate / That to His love and to the expansion of His Kingdom / Was built in God's grace in the year 1929 / Me posuit Arnoldus Franciscus Diepen / episcopus Buscoducensis.
The tower bay has a narrow rectangular form that cuts through the roof in depth. The canopy of the main entrance runs partly through over the brickwork, above it and to the right narrow vertical strips of leaded glass. Above asymmetrically placed small windows with horizontal glazing bars and concrete ornamental band. On the front tower section a copper dome with a cross.
The facade section on the right has on the ground floor first six composite six-pane windows, and in the roof plane above it a strip of narrow attic windows with horizontal glazing bars. The next section is cross-shaped and contained on the storey the chapel. In the "transept" on the ground floor three doors under concrete canopy and fanlight, in the corner a single-storey section with narrow leaded glass windows and hipped roof. The "transept" has staircase-like running leaded glass windows and a brick cross in the pointed gable. The gabled roof behind this ends in an open bell-cot with bell.
In the lower closing section again leaded glass windows and brick cross in the pointed gable.
The chapel section has on the rear side a long and lower extension with leaded glass windows and a "transept" that corresponds with the front facade. Followed again by a strip of windows in the roof plane. This continues in the elongated right-angled extension, but then under the cornice, at the location of the tower bay. The facades on the rear side otherwise have a different renewed arrangement and are partly obscured from view by single-storey additions under flat roof.
Mechanical tower clock, with electric winding.
Valuation
The former seminary is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a representative example of the establishment of training institutes by Catholic congregations in the Interwar period and is also important as an example of the typological development of monastic boarding schools. It has architectural-historical importance as an example of the regional processing of expressionistic motifs and as an example of the work of G. Deur. It has been preserved in good condition. It is rare as an example of a congregational monastery by this Nijmegen architect.
