Inleiding
Het traditionalistische voormalige RAADHUIS werd in 1937-1938 door C. Roffelsen gebouwd op het Marktplein, nabij de uit de late negentiende eeuw daterende linde.
Omschrijving
L-vormig gebouw onder zadeldaken met verbeterde Hollandse pannen, opgetrokken in groot formaat baksteen in staand verband, bestaande uit een drielaags volume, waarop aansluitend een tweelaags bouwdeel. De muren hebben smeedijzeren sierankers, de topgevels vlechtingen in baksteen en natuursteen afdekkingen. De ramen bestaan uit houten kloosterkozijnen met negen- en zesruits stalen ramen, waarboven strekken met kunststenen aanzetstenen. Het hoofdgebouw bezit aan de voorzijde een asymmetrisch geplaatst middendeel met bordes. Dit heeft op de begane grond een rondboogdeur, een ijzeren hek en op de etage een rondboogingang met betonnen aanzet- en sluitstenen, waarboven de tekst Raadhuis. Hierboven op de tweede etage vier rondboogramen met wapens in glas-in-lood onder tuitgeveltjes met pirons, welke de raadzaal belichten. Links van het middendeel groepen van twee ramen. Rechts ervan bewerkstelligt een erker de aansluiting op de tweelaags aanbouw met getoogde ingang op de begane grond en onregelmatig verdeelde hoofdzakelijk tweedelige ramen. In de aanbouw wapenstenen met het gemeente-, rijks- en provinciewapen. De zij- en achtergevels hebben veelal groepen van twee ramen. Aan de achterzijde een met een zadeldak afgedekte, rechthoekige traptoren met hoog zadeldak en glas-in-loodramen. Inwendig in het souterrain twee gedichte loketten. Vermeldenswaard zijn de trappen welke in het souterrain een ijzeren buisleuning hebben en verder een gesloten balustrade in gebouchardeerd beton met houten leuning. De glas-in-loodramen in het trappenhuis hebben afbeeldingen van landbouwproducten uit Uden en de symbolen van geloof, hoop en liefde en zijn vervaardigd door A. Stroucken en Co, te Rotterdam. Verder ramen met Petrus, Antonius Abt en Odilia, de patroons van de kerkdorpen, aangeboden door burgemeester Buskens. De raadszaal op de tweede etage bezit een betimmering met lage lambrisering paneeldeuren en een houten cassetteplafond en wordt door een dubbele rondboog op zuiltje gescheiden van de publieke tribune. In de ramen glas-in-lood door Stroucken met drie symbolische voorstellingen en de wapens van de in Uden gevestigde kerkelijke instellingen. In het gebouw twee gedenkstenen van de bouw in 1938.
Waardering
Het voormalige raadhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van raadhuizen in het Interbellum, ter verhoging van het representatieve karakter en uitdrukking van de waardigheid van het gemeentebestuur, het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het raadhuis in het Interbellum. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de stijl, de decoratieve en waardigheid verhogende elementen in het in- en uitwendige en tevens vanwege de plaats in het oeuvre van de architect Roffelsen. L-shaped building under gabled roofs with improved Dutch tiles, constructed of large-format brick in stretcher bond, consisting of a three-storey volume, to which adjoins a two-storey building section. The walls have wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors, the end gables have lacing in brick and natural stone cappings. The windows consist of wooden cross windows with nine- and six-pane steel windows, above which run with artificial stone ashlar stones. The main building has on the front an asymmetrically placed central section with a dais. This has on the ground floor a round-arched door, an iron fence and on the floor above a round-arched entrance with concrete ashlar and coping stones, above which the text Town Hall. Above this on the second floor four round-arched windows with coats of arms in leaded glass under spout gable pediments with finials, which illuminate the council chamber. To the left of the central section groups of two windows. To the right of it a bay window effects the connection to the two-storey extension with arched entrance on the ground floor and irregularly distributed mainly two-part windows. In the extension coat of arms stones with the municipal, national and provincial coats of arms. The side and rear facades have mostly groups of two windows. At the rear a rectangular stair tower covered with a gabled roof with high gabled roof and leaded glass windows. Internally in the basement two closed windows. The council chamber on the second floor has panelling with low wainscoting panel doors and a wooden coffered ceiling and is separated from the public gallery by a double round arch on small column. In the windows leaded glass by Stroucken with three symbolic representations and the coats of arms of the ecclesiastical institutions established in Uden.
