Inleiding

Introduction

The R.C. CHURCH was established in 1938 according to design by J. van Halteren and built in Gothic-inspired, traditionalist style.

Description

Three-aisled cruciform church, built from imitation handmade brick with west tower, roofed with gabled and lean-to roofs covered with slate.

The tower has diagonal, cut buttresses and consists of four storeys, separated by brick mouldings. The first storey has a pointed arch niche with below a portal with moulded frame in tuff stone and above it a three-part window with brick voussoir tracery. The third storey has a clock face with Art Deco numerals. The bell storey has on each side three pointed arch bell openings and is roofed with a mansard roof with ball, cross and weathervane.

The tower is enclosed between side chapels and portals, in the line of the side aisles.

The adjoining nave consists of four bays and has right-angled buttresses, which are continued above the gutter and topped with cross-oriented coping stones. The transept has lean-to roofs, parallel to the roof of the high choir lantern placed between them, which has a bell gable on the west side for the Angelus bell. The apse is lower than the choir bay, has a 5/8-closure and five high-placed pointed arch windows, two of which were broken through shortly after construction. Nave and transept have pointed arch windows with three-part brick voussoir traceries. In the corners between nave and transept confessionals with entrance portals beneath lean-to roofs have been built. The apse is flanked by sacristies under gabled roofs, with pointed arch windows. Internally the building displays fair-faced masonry in dark brick, with vaults in yellow brick in chain bond. The nave has narrow procession aisles and is spanned by wide pointed arches on squat columns, which support hanging domes. The clerestory windows are cut into the vaults by soffits. Hanging domes are also present in the transepts, choir bay and apse. The apse has an ambulatory with pointed arches and groin vaults. The capitals of the columns are provided by sculptor A. Meertens with symbolic and figurative reliefs depicting Old and New Testament figures. Near the choir two pollard lindens. The entire site is surrounded by a brick coping wall.
