Inleiding
Met elementen van Nieuwe Bouwen in 1931 gebouwd SCHOOLGEBOUW. De school werd gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect F.P.J. Peutz uit Heerlen. Aan de achtergevel werd een aanbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak gerealiseerd.
De naoorlogse aanbouwen van noodlokalen e.d. zijn uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het schoolgebouw met een rechthoekig grondplan telt drie bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een plat dak met breed dakoverstek.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen voorzien van een cementering. Rechthoekige vensters met stalen kozijnen.
Geglazuurde dorpelstenen. Asymmetrische indeling FRONTGEVEL. In middendeel frontgevel entreepartij in hoger doorlopend geveldeel met groot verticaal glasvlak. Toegangsdeur onder een beton luifel en met halfronde toegangstrap met zes treden. Stalen toegangsdeur onder beton luifel. In linkerdeel frontgevel in de eerste bouwlaag een uitbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak. In rechterdeel frontgevel in elke bouwlaag een rechthoekig venster met daarnaast in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag een breed halfhoog venster.
Voor het rechterdeel van de frontgevel een grote bloembak met ommuring.
In de RECHTERZIJGEVEL in de derde bouwlaag drie rechthoekige stalen vensters.
In de LINKERZIJGEVEL in het bouwdeel met trappenhuis een driedelig keldervenster; in de eerste bouwlaag een driedelig venster; in de tweede bouwlaag een zesdelig venster en in de derde bouwlaag een negendelig venster.
ACHTERGEVEL met aan linkerzijde iets vooruitspringend bouwvolume met hierin de klaslokalen. In de eerste en tweede bouwlaag grote rechthoekige stalen vensters, in de derde bouwlaag enkel aan de rechterzijde een groot venster. In de eerste bouwlaag is een vensterkozijn uitgevoerd in aluminium.
In de rechterzijde van de achtergevel twee terugspringende geveldelen. In de oksel van de achtergevel en de aanbouw een entree in een afgeschuind geveldeel. De achtergevelentree onder een betonluifel en met stalen deur en pui. Het rechtergeveldeel van de achtergevel telt twee bouwlagen met in elke bouwlaag rechthoekige vensters. Evenwijdig aan achtergevel een aflopende fietsbaan naar de kelderruimte onder de school.
Aanbouw haaks op het rechterdeel van de achtergevel in een bouwlaag met plat dak. In deze aanbouw drie grote stalen vensterkozijnen.
Structuur van het INTERIEUR is vrijwel in tact. Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer van belang. Entreehal met vloer met gele tegeltjes en kleine glazen stenen.
Authentiek trappenhuis met trappen met zwarte granito treden en smeedijzeren trapleuningen. Traplambrizering met gele tegeltjes. Gele gangtegels. In de wanden tussen gangen en lokalen houten vensterkozijnen.
Waardering
De vml. ULO-school is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en typologische ontwikkeling. De school bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege haar bijzonder belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, als een ontwerp in de stijl van het Nieuwe Bouwen binnen het oeuvre van architect F.P.J. Peutz en wegens de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur. Ensemblewaarde ontleent de school aan de bijzondere betekenis wegens de situering binnen het gezicht Tempsplein e.o. en daarmee van belang voor het aanzien van dit deel van Heerlen. De school is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de hoge mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en interieur en de architectuurhistorische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.
