Inleiding

Introduction

ROOMS-KATHOLIEKE KERK H. CORNELIUS was built between 1909 and 1918 to the design of Joz. Cuypers from Roermond and Jan Stuyt from Den Haag. Architect Jan Stuyt worked at the beginning of his career together with Joz. Cuypers. The architectural style of the church is traditionalist with neo-Romanesque stylistic influences. The church was built for the population increase that the mines brought to the nearby settlement of Heerlerheide. The church stands high on and against a sand dune, on the site of the old church from 1839. After the war the church received new bells and church pews and internally a devotional chapel was built for Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. In 1986 Architectengroep Mertens carried out a number of alterations: the chancel was moved back, the storage next to the apse becomes a sacristy, the side apse (left) becomes a baptismal chapel and the entrance doors are narrowed. These alterations do not detract from the monumentality of the church building. The roof covering was originally red tiles and is now slate.

Description

The CORNELIUS CHURCH has a three-aisled basilical nave on a cruciform ground plan. The nave ends in a semicircular apse. Between the transept arms and the choir the sacristies are placed. Gabled roofs and pavilion roofs with slate and gutters. Under the gutters a band of black-and-white checkered tiles has been applied. The facades have a plinth in bond with a red roll moulding, a projection of reddish-brown brickwork in bond. In the facade are semicircular arched stained-glass windows, these are located under a semicircular arched lintel and a projecting semicircular arch of red brickwork. The windows are placed individually or grouped in threes. In the latter case the lintels are continuous. Rectangular and semicircular arched wooden doors with fittings.

The FRONT FACADE is symmetrically arranged and has a central entrance. The entrance is located in a semicircular arched niche, containing two recessed niches and a double rectangular wooden door with corrugated fittings in semicircular arched form. The double wooden door dates from around 1986. Next to the entrance three small windows. Above the entrance a semicircular arched roll moulding, above which three windows located in a double niche. In the gable a round window under stepped slabs with block teeth. Two TOWERS with three storeys of two windows, two large louvered openings with a central column. The right tower has a bell, located in a red brickwork frame of two squares of which one is rotated 22.5 degrees. The tower clock movement from March 1913 comes from Gebrs. Kerckhofs from Aarle-Rixtel. On the tower a pavilion roof with slate. On the roof of the church likewise slate is laid.

The SIDE FACADES have five bays at the location of the nave, these are located at the location of the side aisles under a roof slab and are separated from each other by lesenes. Each bay of the side aisle has one window with tiles above and next to the lintel. Against the first and third bays confessionals are placed under a gabled roof. In the facade of the confessionals are three small windows, these are sealed on the side of the rectory. At the location of the nave there are three windows per bay with tiles above and next to the lintel. Above this is a white plastered band.

The TRANSEPT ARM has a gable with three windows above which a cross motif of two rotated squares in red brickwork. The facade ends with slabs and lesenes. On the ridge a circle containing a cross. The side facades of the transept arm have a checkered tile motif under the gutter. In the junction of transept arm and side aisle is a small portal of one storey under a half-hipped pavilion roof with ridge ornament. The portal has an entrance with double wooden doors under a lintel. Further three windows with herringbone pattern screens. Behind the right transept arm lies the SACRISTY, this is a volume of one storey under a roof slab and gabled roofs, running out in a pavilion roof with ridge ornament. In the facade of the choir, located behind the sacristy a cross-shaped motif of yellow and red brickwork has been applied. In the facade of the sacristy is a semicircular arched door under a semicircular arched lintel with slightly projecting brickwork frame, three stepwise placed narrow windows and in the gable three narrow windows. Under the roof plane there is still a block tooth band.

The REAR FACADE OF THE SACRISTY has six windows. The REAR FACADE OF THE CHOIR has lesenes and slabs under the roof edge with block tooth decorations. The facade ends with a brickwork small angelus bell. Against the choir stands a semicircular APSE with seven windows. On the apse a semicircular pavilion roof with cross with under the gutter a checkered tile motif in black and white. In front of the apse stands a wall with projecting sawtooth and 2 wagon wheels. This wall dates from around 1986.

The INTERIOR of the Cornelius Church has a cruciform ground plan, consisting of a nave with side aisles separated by four semicircular arches. The chancel is separated from the transept arms by two higher semicircular arches. Between the nave and the chancel and the chancel and the choir are still higher semicircular arches. Behind the choir stands a semicircular apse. Against the left transept arm stands a smaller apse. The sacristy is located between the right transept arm and the choir. The NAVE consists of five bays and has a coffered ceiling. The side aisles are separated from the nave by columns of Kunradersteen, these are connected to each other by arches of alternating red brickwork and yellow limestone. Above each arch are three stained-glass windows with geometric figures. In the windows are the names of the donors indicated. The walls are white plastered.

In the SIDE AISLES stands per bay a semicircular arch between the outer wall and column and has a stained-glass window per bay. Between the arches is a flat ceiling. The walls are white plastered.

The GALLERY has a wooden balustrade, behind which three high stained-glass windows with images including Caecilia.

Under the gallery a devotional chapel for Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was made in a niche on the site of the former access to the gallery. Execution by the firm Donker from Eindhoven. The Mary statue by the Maastricht artist Harrie Pieters is made of opaline.

The CHANCEL is elevated and accessible via four steps. The arches between the chancel and the nave, the chancel and the transept arms, the chancel and the choir and the side aisles and the transept arms have columns of Kunradersteen with arches of red brickwork and yellow limestone. The arches with the transept arms are reinforced with steel. The TRANSEPT ARMS have three stained-glass windows in the end facade. The small apse against the left transept arm is the baptismal chapel. The apse has five small windows with leaf motif. In the APSE are five stained-glass windows present with images of the Sacred Heart, Mary, Joseph, Cornelius and St. John the Evangelist. The windows have the names of the donors.

Further of importance in the interior are among others the altar from 1925 by H.J. Eymael of Heerlen. Church pew from 1914 donated by Mr Charles Baron de Bieberstein Rocalla Zawadzky contains the family coat of arms. Two confessionals with panel doors with carved woodwork and coloured stained glass. In the sacristy stands still a former confessional.

Assessment

The Cornelius Church is of cultural-historical value as an expression of a socio-economic development through mining, and a spiritual development through the Roman Catholic Church. The architectural-historical value is determined by the importance of the church for the oeuvre of the architects J. Cuypers and J. Stuyt (in particular as an example from their early collaboration period), the high aesthetic qualities of the design, the ornamentation and the largely intact interior. The church is of particular significance due to its location, linked to the development of Heerlen as a result of the population increase through mining and thus of particular significance for the appearance of Heerlen. Furthermore, the church is of general importance due to the architectural-historical rarity and the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values.
