Inleiding
Dit smeedijzeren HEK op een laag bakstenen muurtje bevindt zich voor het woonblok dat architect N.J. Adema heeft ontworpen in 1909 aan de Zuiderkade 2, 3 en 4. Het hek volgt de afgebogen lijn van het woonblok. Ook het hek is door N.J. Adema ontworpen. De ontwerptekeningen worden in het archief van de familie Adema bewaard. Het hek is in Art Nouveau-trant ontworpen en uitgevoerd.
Omschrijving
Het smeedijzeren hekwerk rust op een drie bakstenen hoog muurtje; drie draaibare vleugels tussen opengewerkte smeedijzeren bekroningen vormen de toegangen. Het hekwerk zelf bestaat uit regels en stijlen van verschillende lengte met gestileerde florale motieven.

Het smeedijzeren hek voor het woonblok aan de Zuiderkade 2, 3 en 4 te Franeker is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:

Introduction
This wrought-iron FENCE on a low brick wall is situated in front of the residential block designed by architect N.J. Adema in 1909 at Zuiderkade 2, 3 and 4. The fence follows the curved line of the residential block. The fence was also designed by N.J. Adema. The design drawings are preserved in the archive of the Adema family. The fence was designed and executed in the Art Nouveau style.
Description
The wrought-iron fencing rests on a wall three bricks high; three hinged wings between open-worked wrought-iron cresting form the entrances. The fencing itself consists of rails and stiles of varying length with stylized floral motifs.
