Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

A HAY BARN FARMHOUSE built entirely of timber on the west side of Dorpsstraat, consisting of a dwelling house, barn and hay barn placed one behind the other, with the latter as the highest element determining the image of the farmhouse. The farmhouse stands on a long narrow plot oriented at right angles to Dorpsstraat. According to cadastral records, the dwelling house is in its core older than 1826, the barn was built in 1899 and the hay barn in 1900. The barn may have been renewed in 1934.

Description

Hay barn farmhouse with dwelling section directly on Dorpsstraat. Behind this stand the adjoining barn and hay barn. The building follows the east-west direction of the plot.

The dwelling house is a timber frame construction of one storey with roof on a rectangular ground plan. The dwelling house has an outshut on the north side. The walls are built up from various types of weatherboarding. The gabled roof is closed at the rear (west side) with a hipped end.

The east gable of the dwelling house facing Dorpsstraat is largely a blind pointed gable, built up from wide vertical sections with the first storey and the top gable separated by a bressummer. The gable top projects slightly above this bressummer and is closed off by simple wind braces that meet at a tie beam. The front gable has on the right a six-light sash window and in the gable top a loading hatch with fanlight.

The south gable has weather-struck weatherboarding of wide sections and contains the front door. To the left of the door a small horizontal window and to the right a nine-light and a six-light window. The left side gable is closed off with a wooden gutter on carved consoles.

The north gable retains the original weather-struck weatherboarding of wide hand-planed sections. This gable is provided with three small irregularly placed windows and is closed off by a wooden gutter on carved consoles.

The rear gable is the same as the north gable with regard to weatherboarding and is, with the exception of a small window at the far right, entirely blind.

The barn is a timber frame construction of one storey with gabled roof laid with red and black Dutch tiles. The east gable has weather-struck weatherboarding up to the gable top, while the gable top is boarded vertically. The gable has on the ground floor a double door with six-light fanlight. On either side of the door a four-light window. The gable top has a high loading hatch with three-light fanlight, simple wind braces and a simple tie beam. The weather-struck left side gable has five small four-light windows and a wooden gutter. The weather-struck right side gable has a door with fanlight and three four-light windows and a wooden gutter. The weather-struck rear side is half concealed behind the hay barn built not in line. The part of the rear side visible from outside has a four-light window, the half gable top has an unprofiked wind brace.

The entirely weather-struck hay barn has a timber frame on a rectangular ground plan and is closed off with a hipped roof covered with red and black Dutch tiles with two tie beams. The ridge line stands at right angles to the ridge lines of dwelling house and barn. The hay barn has a square frame construction with four slimmer posts between the four corner posts. The hay barn has on all sides a centrally placed loading door at ground level. The left side (S) and right side (N) have a second loading hatch above this.

Valuation

The hay barn farmhouse built in the local tradition is of general importance from a cultural and architectural history perspective as a well-preserved and rare example of completely timber-built farmhouse construction from the nineteenth century. The farmhouse also has contextual value as part of the village character of Watergang, whose unique spatial character is determined by the silhouettes of various hay barns.
