Inleiding

- als karakteristiek voorbeeld van een tuinmanswoning, behorend bij een state, aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw;

- als het enige gebouw dat nog herinnert aan het bestaan van de Sminiastate;

- vanwege de bouwstijl, waarin elementen van de Chaletstijl zijn toegepast;

- vanwege de detaillering en de ornamentiek;

Introduction

GARDENER'S/FORESTER'S DWELLING in Chalet style originally belonging to Sminiastate. In 1889 the then owner of the estate, G. Buma, commissioned the architect H.H. Kramer (1878-1934) from Leeuwarden to design a gardener's dwelling. The carpenter/contractor Roelof Annes de Jong from Oenkerk built the dwelling in 1890. The house stands next to the entrance of the so-called Turkey and Greece woods which were laid out by the Van Sminia family. A low hedge forms the boundary along the public road. A narrow wrought-iron spear GATE gives access to the path to the front door; the drive along the south facade of the house is closed off with an iron entrance gate into which the name Bosk-Ein is incorporated. The gates are simply finished. Alterations: the original brickwork with gable bands has been painted white; the original glazing bars of the windows have largely disappeared.

Description

The white-painted single-storey dwelling on an L-shaped floor plan under two crossing gabled roofs is covered with black Lucas IJsbrand tiles; overhanging roof shields on profiled wooden consoles; a chimney of brown brick with ceramic smoke deflector; on the crossing of the gabled roofs a wooden finial.

On the front and left facades are projecting gables with identical facade layout. Gable tops with overhanging decorative brace in the form of a truncated three-lobe arch at the top. The brace rests on profiled brackets and is filled with latticework. On the ridge a decorative gable weathervane post. In the brace on the front facade hangs a sign with the name Bosk-Ein. The ground floor windows in the projections consist of a large -altered- window pane with shutters under three-pane fanlight. Above these window sections are small balconies with profiled lattice railing and gilded ornamental balls on the corner balusters; French doors to the balcony under two-pane fanlight.

In the front facade the entrance with original panel door under two-pane fanlight. All window sections have more or less subdivided fanlights and shutters. Above the windows and entrance sections are lintels of various arch forms in fair-faced brickwork of brown brick. Against the rear facade is a simple extension under a flat roof (1969).

Valuation

The former gardener's dwelling from 1890 is of general cultural and architectural-historical importance:

- as a characteristic example of a gardener's dwelling, belonging to an estate, at the end of the nineteenth century;

- as the only building that still recalls the existence of Sminiastate;

- due to the building style, in which elements of Chalet style have been applied;

- due to the detailing and ornamentation;

- due to the spatial and functional relationship with the adjoining Turkey and Greece woods.
