Omschrijving

Description

Historical GARDEN and PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Klinze. The presumed seventeenth-century structure of the layout is formed by the straight access avenue perpendicular to the house, which is planted on both sides with a double row of oaks; the avenue is crossed by a straight transverse lane (Zwarte and Rode Singel). This axis system forms together with the moat around the house plot the oldest part of the layout. According to the Topographic Military Map (1854), wooded strips lay on both sides of the access avenue. At the landscaping layout in 1834 according to the design of garden architect L. P. Roodbaard, the eastern wooded strip was (probably) felled to create a diagonal vista from the house and forecourt over the meadows. The western wooded strip was then transformed into a landscape layout with the elongated water features and height differences so characteristic of Roodbaard. Roodbaard's layout comprised two parts: the densely planted area behind the house and the elongated terrain to the west of the drive. The rectangular terrain around the house and the course of the moat were rounded off. Originally the layout also had an outer walk that ran more along the edge of the terrain. The original layout with beds in front of the house was altered. To the west of the access avenue, Roodbaard positioned a four-armed pond feature (fore-pond) with rounded lobes; this ends at the south side in a loop at the foot of a rather high raised mound. The extension at the northeast side of the fore-pond is known as the timber pond. Through the relief and the shape of the pond feature (arms turning away), the circuit walk is alternating and unpredictable. Over the pond lie on the west side a new curved chain bridge in historicising style and, on the east side, a new brick arch bridge in historicising style. Both bridges were installed during the restoration of the park in the 1990s. Around the house plot lies a park wood (partly overgrown) with winding paths, old trees, a winding stream (the snake pond) and in the northeastern corner, at the foot of a mound with steep sides, another pond (the ice pond). Originally the park wood continued further in the southeastern direction, as can be seen on the Topographic map of 1926 (edition 1930), but this part was felled to make way for agricultural land. Otherwise, the park was determined around 1925 to a large extent by winding paths and tall trees in the form of oaks, red and green beeches, chestnut trees and weeping willow. Behind the house stands a monumental lime tree (Tilia vulgaris 'Pallida' or King's Lime), planted in the 17th century. The restoration of the layout was completed in 1998.

Valuation

The historical GARDEN and PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Klinze is of general cultural and garden-historical importance:

- because of its age and the associated history

- because of the well-preserved formal structure (avenues and moat system) and the landscaping layout realised within it from the first half of the nineteenth century according to the design of garden architect L. P. Roodbaard

- as a good example of a work from the early oeuvre of Roodbaard

- because of the visual and spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate
