Inleiding

Description
Introduction
R.K. H. Odulphus CHURCH with CHURCH TOWER, in Neo-Gothic style, built between 1880 and 1911, designed by architect K. Weber.
Description
The church is a three-aisle cruciform church in Neo-Gothic style with tower and roof turret by architect K. Weber, 1880-82, tower 1884-85.
The church is a brick construction with natural stone decorative elements. The nave has six bays, the projecting transept has a three-sided closure, the choir has four bays of varying width and a 3/8 closure. Beside the tower a side chapel. The choir is provided with an ambulatory, side chapels and sacristy. The tower has diagonal buttresses and four storeys. The first storey is flat, the second narrow, partly coupled pointed arch niches. In the corner between tower and left side aisle is an octagonal stair turret on a square base. The main entrance consists of a soaring portal with entrance and a four-light window that breaks through the first and second storeys. The third storey has pointed arch niches, the fourth contains the sound holes under a canopy with dial. The buttresses, like the tower, have narrow, decorated with natural stone coupled niches and end at the height of the balustrade around the octagonal spire in corner pinnacles. In details the tower shows borrowings from Kempen Gothic. The church building is considerably simpler detailed with sparing application of natural stone. Cappings and chamfers of the buttresses, the mouldings and traceries are of hardstone. All windows show two-part traceries. The side aisle is braced by flying buttresses. The roof turret on the crossing is an octagon with lead-clad pinnacles and flying buttresses.
Interiorly the church displays brick polychromy with natural stone and gilding, while the wall surfaces are plastered and whitewashed. The elevation is three-part.
Round pillars with colonnettes carry the simply profiled arcade arches.
The triforium consists of a series of pointed arch niches above which the side aisle windows. Nave, transept and side aisles have cross-ribbed vaults with ribs in brick. The choir, which otherwise shows the same three-part division, has net vaults with natural stone ribs. The nave bay before the arches is somewhat narrower and contains the natural stone rood screen (1886) with three pointed arches with openwork traceries and two angels, Cecilia and David. In the choir closure under the soaring windows an ambulatory with gallery, whereby small windows cast light into the choir and the ambulatory. The pillars in the chapels to the left and right of the choir show portraits of building pastor Van de Velde and the architect by J. van der Mark at Eindhoven (1882). The furnishings of the church are Neo-Gothic. The Vollebregt organ (1852) with a front of three pipe towers and flat fields with ornamental carved work, the Stations of the Cross (1850) the remains of the pulpit and the confession boxes originate from the previous church. Organ case, made by J. Vollenbregt in 1852, and parts of the pipework are of value from the point of view of heritage conservation. The high altar has a tomb with the Holy Sepulchre from 1882 by Van der Mark, the retable contains representations of birth, last supper, resurrection and Pentecost and on the shutters paintings by J. Oosterman with Zacharias and Malachi and dates from 1917. The altars of Mary and Odulphus (with Annunciation and Visitation) were made in 1889 and 1890 by H. van der Geld. In the transepts paintings by P. van den Boer from 1896 with the offerings of Abraham and Melchizedek. The baptismal font, Neo-Gothic (1887), the benches are from circa 1820. The windows were made in 1948-49 by Luc. van Hoek. Finally there is a large series of sculptures from the 19th century and later, including work by H. van der Geld and J. Custers.
