Omschrijving

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Menkemaborg. The layout of Menkemaborg is determined by the typical form of a manor grounds consisting of an inner moat around the house, a square outer moat and a belt planted with, amongst others, (monumental) beech trees. The formal early-18th-century structure of the layout, corresponding with the preserved garden design attributed to the architect Meijer, is carried by this moat system and by an avenue and axis system. The main axis (axis of symmetry) is formed by an access avenue planted with double rows of clipped linden trees, which is projected straight onto the house and continues inside the house in the corridor and subsequently forms behind the house the central axis of the parterre. Perpendicular to this axis are two cross-axes, namely a cross-avenue (belt) before the forecourt and a cross-axis, the intersection point of which is precisely the centre of the manor. The forecourt is laid out with an elongated carved bed with the treasure house to its left and to its right a garden wall which, by its crowning with a false gutter and layers of roof tiles, serves as a pendant to the treasure house. Around the house lie symmetrically arranged compartments, the infill of which is now partly reconstructed according to the 18th-century situation. Use is made of the aforementioned garden design attributed to Meijer and other 18th-century examples. The parterre behind the house is bounded on the south-west side by a clipped hedge, which already appears on the 18th-century garden design. From the historicising layout by garden architect H. Copijn from 1921, the maze and the pear arbour have been preserved. The layout has an enclosed character, which is caused by the belt raised with soil from the moat, which is planted partly with beech trees dating from the early eighteenth century. Around the manor lie meadows with two elongated fish ponds: a fish-breeding pond (to the north-west) and a pike pond (to the south-east).

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Menkemaborg of general importance: - by virtue of the well-preserved formal structure formed by the avenue and moat pattern; - as a characteristic example of manor grounds; - by virtue of the garden components still present by H. Copijn, namely the maze and pear arbour, which are a typical example of a historicising layout from the early 20th century; - by virtue of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
