Inleiding

Description
Introduction
LUTHERAN CHURCH, built by Purmerend city architect P. Mager in eclectic style between 1878 (laying of the first stone) and 1880 (consecration). The present church in the city centre replaced an earlier church building from 1712 on the same site, which appears for example on the city plan by I. Tirion from 1743. This first building was erected behind the buildings on the Hoogstraat. The set-back position was maintained in the current building, albeit here with a forecourt instead of a house on the street. Until some decades ago the forecourt was closed off by fencing with stone piers, two of which had lanterns. Partial restoration of facades and stained glass windows took place in 1994.
N.B. The community building behind the church on the Westersteeg (1932) does not fall under the protection.
Description
The Lutheran church is a hall church on a rectangular floor plan with a narrow, three-sided closed apse at the liturgical wall on the west. The ridge direction lies transversely across the Hoogstraat. The facades are built of machine-made brick laid in English bond. The gabled roof is covered with black old Dutch tiles, the tower spire on the front facade with slate.
The front facade (east) is laid out as if it were a three-aisle church: three round-arched windows with the middle one being the largest with the width of the entrance, separated by wall piers with a pinnacle-like crown. The horizontal articulation is made by a ground zone and entrance clad with ashlar plates, the window zone and the top gable which is set off with arch frieze and small bell turret (bells, clock, swan as weather vane). In the portal the laying of the first stone is recorded in two marble plaques. The windows of front and side facades have an iron window frame equipped with purple and green coloured glass.
The windows of the front facade have around them a blocked and profiled moulding.
The side facades (south and north) are not visible and are executed over five bays as flat facades with a low cemented base. Ornamental wall anchors for floors and vault. The gutter lies on a projecting brick moulding.
The blind choir facade (west) contains in the top two iron grilles and a round window that bring light and air into the roof space.
The interior has a plank floor. The walls are plastered; only the north wall still has the original rusticated finish up to the windows. The fittings consist of a hexagonal pulpit with tester in the apse and church council benches on either side, further wooden chairs and bench blocks along the walls and rear. The eastern wall with entrance has wooden panelling and doors. The wooden ceiling has flat side sections with narrow wooden arches on consoles that support a gently sloping central section. Chandeliers hang down from the arches. Above the portal, vestry and store room is the organ gallery with a Van Dam organ from 1892 on it.
Valuation
The Lutheran church is of general importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as a fine example of a Lutheran church from the 19th century in eclectic style.
