Inleiding

Introduction

Former neo-Renaissance TOWN HALL of Purmerend, built in the years 1911-1912 to the design of architect Jan Stuyt, who was born in Purmerend in 1868, in collaboration with city architect W. Postema. The building replaces predecessors on the same site: the first building dated from approximately 1591, which in 1633 was lifted and moved back by means of jacks (in that form the building is known from a print by Corn. Pronk from 1727). Thorough repairs were carried out in 1764-66 and a renovation took place in 1845-46, whereby the exterior changed from Renaissance to neo-classical. The urban planning situation is remarkable: at the 14th-century junction of roads in the city centre, also since the 17th century a cheese market, in connection with the weigh house and principal city church, which in their present form all date from the 19th and early 20th century. For approximately 10 years, the building has lost its function as town hall.

N.B. The new addition to the east facade falls outside the protection.

Description

The former town hall is built on a rectangular floor plan and consists of a ground floor, mezzanine and roof storey with the ridge parallel to the building line of the Kaasmarkt. It was constructed in machine-made brick (laid in cross bond) with decorative use of sandstone for keystones, at the windows, at the corners and in the gable tops.

The front facade (south) at the Kaasmarkt is dominated by the eccentrically placed entrance section, consisting of a perron with a flight of steps on both sides, a portal executed in sandstone (pilasters, pediment, relief with allegory of good governance) and crowning stepped gable provided with brickwork bands, window and lion bearing a shield on top. The balustrade of the perron has two lions bearing shields with the old and later (present) city coat of arms of Purmerend. Two facade lanterns have been placed next to the entrance. In all facades cross windows have been placed, filled with green and white stained glass; the ground floor windows have shutters for the movable parts.

The left and right side facades (west and east) are virtually identical, provided with windows and a stepped gable as at the front with the chimney on the western top.

In the rear facade (north), modifications have been made, including for a lift.

The gabled roof between the stepped gables is covered with slate and has an octagonal bell tower with clockwork (1883, Ed. Korfhage, Buer Dtsl.), carillon and pear-shaped finial. The original chimney on the ridge was removed.

Of the interior, the arrangement in council chamber and mayor's office has been maintained. Further to be mentioned are the stained-glass window in the hall, made by the art craftsperson Jac. Jongert in 1912, and some stone consoles from the tower base, which may have originated from the earlier town hall.

Valuation

The former town hall is of general importance from an architectural-historical perspective as a neo-Renaissance example following an older predecessor, designed by Jan Stuyt. The town hall has ensemble value because of its prominent and historical place in the centre of the city.
