Inleiding
Voormalige KAASWAAG in neo-renaissancistische vormgeving gebouwd in 1882-1883 door stadsarchitect P. Mager op de plaats van een eerdere kaas- en boterwaag, en (voor 1742) van de stads-boterwaag. Het huidige gebouw ligt enige meters teruggeschoven ten opzichte van de oorspronkelijke waag, zoals ook het naastgelegen stadhuis ten opzichte van diens voorganger. Het centrale stadsplein en wegenkruis, Kaasmarkt genoemd naar de belangrijkste functie, werd daarmee ruimer. In 1884 werd op de verdieping de tekenschool gevestigd en aan de zuidzijde van het gebouw de stoombrandspuit. Het torenuurwerk uit 1883 (door Ed. Korfhage, te Buer Dtsl.) werd in 1913 op het nieuwgebouwde stadhuis geplaatst.
Omschrijving
De voormalige kaaswaag is gebouwd op rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee bouwlagen en kapverdieping met de nok evenwijdig aan de rooilijn.
De voorgevel (west) heeft zes traveeën. De benedenzone is bekleed met hardsteenplaten met rustica-indeling. De drie brede vensteropeningen met de sluitstenen 'Anno' '1883' en een weegschaal, waren oorspronkelijk de deuropeningen van de waag. De verdieping werd uitgevoerd met metselwerk in kruisverband van rode machinale baksteen met rond en tussen de vensters decoratie van (profiel)banden in gele machinale baksteen. De decoratieve boognissen boven de vensters en de kruisvensterindeling zijn uitgevoerd in natuursteen. De linker hoektravee werd verbijzonderd met een inzwenkende geveltop, rond venster en houten frontonbekroning. De middelste van de vijf andere traveeën heeft op de verdieping iets uitspringend metselwerk onder de klokkestoel.
De linkerzijgevel (noord) is een blinde vanwege een eerdere belending. De rechterzijgevel (zuid) van één travee heeft twee natuursteeninscripties boven de openingen (voormalige deuropeningen): 'brandspuit' en 'teekenschool', een verdiepingsvenster en wordt bekroond door een geveltop als links aan de voorgevel.
De achtergevel (oost) is gewijzigd; de vensteropeningen werden dichtgemetseld.
Rondom loopt een houten goot met geprofileerde lijst.
De nok van het zadeldak knikt op het noorden om naar de geveltop en is gedekt met geglazuurde Friese golfpannen. Boven de middeningang bevindt zich een houten klokkestoel met in de onderbouw het stadswapen van Purmerend.
Waardering
De voormalige kaaswaag is van algemeen belang uit architectuurhistorisch oogpunt als typologisch goed voorbeeld van een 19de-eeuws waaggebouw. Verder is het gebouw van ensemblewaarde vanwege de stedebouwkundige plaatsing en de neo-renaissance vormgeving. Introduction
Former CHEESE WEIGHING HOUSE in neo-Renaissance style built in 1882-1883 by city architect P. Mager on the site of an earlier cheese and butter weighing house, and (before 1742) of the city butter weighing house. The current building is set back some metres compared to the original weighing house, as is the adjacent town hall compared to its predecessor. The central city square and road junction, named Kaasmarkt after its primary function, thus became more spacious. In 1884 a drawing school was established on the first floor and a steam fire engine on the south side of the building. The tower clock from 1883 (by Ed. Korfhage, of Buer Germany) was placed on the newly built town hall in 1913.
Description
The former cheese weighing house is built on a rectangular floor plan and consists of two storeys and roof storey with the ridge parallel to the building line.
The front facade (west) has six bays. The ground zone is clad with ashlar plates with rusticated articulation. The three wide window openings with keystones 'Anno' '1883' and a weighing scale were originally the door openings of the weighing house. The first floor was executed with masonry in English bond of red machine-made brick with decorative mouldings (profiled) in yellow machine-made brick round and between the windows. The decorative arches above the windows and the cross-window glazing are executed in natural stone. The left corner bay is distinguished by an angled gable top, round window and wooden gable crown. The middle of the five other bays has slightly projecting masonry on the first floor under the bell turret.
The left side facade (north) is blind due to earlier adjoining building. The right side facade (south) of one bay has two natural stone inscriptions above the openings (former door openings): 'fire engine' and 'drawing school', a first floor window and is crowned by a gable top as on the left of the front facade.
The rear facade (east) has been altered; the window openings were bricked up.
Round about runs a wooden gutter with profiled moulding.
The ridge of the gabled roof bends on the north towards the gable top and is covered with glazed Frisian pantiles. Above the central entrance is a wooden bell turret with the city coat of arms of Purmerend in the base.
Valuation
The former cheese weighing house is of general importance from an architectural-historical perspective as a typologically good example of a 19th-century weighing house. Furthermore, the building is of ensemble value because of its urban planning position and neo-Renaissance design. From a cultural and social-historical perspective, the weighing house is of value because of its important, centuries-old function for the city and the surrounding area.
