Omschrijving

Description
Component 1
Description
HUIS SCHERPENZEEL is a building, which was founded in the 14th century as a residential tower, extended in the 16th and 17th centuries and between 1857-1859 rebuilt to its present form by S.A. van Lunteren. The house consists of two parallel wings under gabled roofs covered with tiles between stepped gables dating from the 17th century. The facades are plastered and provided with ornaments in the style of William II Gothic. Centrally in the front facade lies a wide cast-iron portico. In front of this is located a bridge in Neo-Gothic style (see for this component 5). The entrance section is flanked by two five-sided pilasters with projecting termination. The entrance consists of a double door with fanlight in front of which a balcony on pilasters. Next to the door on the left and right a sash window with a pitched arch closing. Above the middle window of the upper storey a heraldic shield of (the lords and later municipality of) Scherpenzeel. To the left and right of the entrance section two sober facade sections with two windows, straight-headed. The facade is terminated by an arcaded frieze above which a crenellated moulding. On the corners of the front facade a tower-like element with projecting crenellated crown. The side facades have stepped gables, simple sash windows with above the windows of the upper storey two coupled windows. The rear facade is asymmetrical in layout with to the left of centre a projecting section (the old residential tower) with windows with pitched arches and a heavy crown with pilasters and crenellations.
In the interior the cellars with thick walls and barrel vaults are of importance. The floors are laid with grey and red tiles. The kitchen with fireplace and cupboard is covered with groin vaults. The principal storey consists of a central hall on to which four doors open, decorated with crenellations; to the left and right of the hall two rooms one behind the other over the full depth of the house. All fireplaces present are from the time of Van Lunteren. The windows are provided with (sash) shutters, the plaster ceilings are plastered around the old main beams. The rich Neo-Gothic ceilings could not be retained during restoration work in the eighties. Behind the hall is the staircase from 1858. Under the beams in the staircase consoles with the heads of men and women have been placed. In the roof truss on the south side the 17th-century oak roof trusses with carpenters' marks and house marks have been preserved.

- because of the place it occupies in the oeuvre of S.A. van Lunteren;
- as part of a total concept;
- because of the interior components mentioned in the description;
- because of its ensemble value as a house centrally located in the park with various sight lines to the outside.
