Inleiding
Schoolgebouw, in 1882 als HBS en Gymnasium gebouwd. De school, met aan de Neorenaissance ontleende elementen, staat geheel vrij, aan het Engelenbergplantsoen, tegenover het voormalige stadsziekenhuis de Engelenbergstichting. De hoofdingang is vernieuwd. Een aanbouw onder lessenaarsdak aan de achterzijde valt wegens te geringe ouderdom en gebrek aan monumentale waarden buiten de bescherming. In het interieur is de oorspronkelijke centrale bordestrap in ongeveer 1960 vervangen door een trap in moderne vormgeving, die de hoofdstructuur van het gebouw niet aantast.
Omschrijving
Schoolgebouw op U-vormig plattegrond in drie bouwlagen, onder met Hollandse pannen belegde schilddaken, waarin enkele dakkapellen met vleugelstukken onder fronton. De in bruine baksteen gemetselde gevels rusten op een hardstenen plint en worden afgesloten door een gepleisterde daklijst; cordonlijsten markeren de verdiepingen. De gevels worden regelmatig geleed door lisenen met zandstenen basement en kapitelen, waartussen verticale vensters met roedenverdeling; op de parterre vensters met een halfrond bovenlicht onder zandstenen rondboog, op de verdiepingen rechtgesloten vensters. De tweede verdieping wordt afgesloten door een rondboogfries met mythologische figuren in de boogtrommels. In de oostgevel met hoekrisalieten bevindt zich de entreepartij in de centrale travee. De ingang ligt in een brede portiek met drie rondbogen op bakstenen pijlers met hardstenen basement. De bogen hebben eenzelfde zandstenen omlijsting als de eerder genoemde vensters.
De achtergevel heeft een soberder detaillering; cordonlijsten op consoles scheiden de verdiepingen; de vensters zijn als in de overige gevels. Een hoog opgemetselde middenpartij ritmeert de gevel en bevat op de begane grond een tweede ingang, die toegang geeft tot het trappenhuis. De eindgevels van de noord- en zuidgevel hebben blinde vensters.

School building, built in 1882 as a grammar school and gymnasium. The school, with elements borrowed from Neorenaissance, stands completely free, on the Engelenbergplantsoen, opposite the former city hospital the Engelenbergstichting. The main entrance has been renovated. An extension under a lean-to roof on the rear side falls outside protection due to insufficient age and lack of monumental value. Description
School building on a U-shaped ground plan in three storeys, beneath hipped roofs covered with Dutch tiles, in which some roof dormers with wing pieces under a pediment. The facades, laid in brown brick, rest on a hardstone plinth and are finished with a plastered drip moulding; waistbands mark the floors. The facades are regularly articulated by pilaster strips with sandstone bases and capitals, between which vertical windows with glazing bars; on the ground floor windows with a semicircular fanlight under a sandstone round arch, on the upper floors straight-headed windows. The second floor is finished with a round-arch frieze with mythological figures in the arch voussoirs. In the east facade with corner projections is situated the entrance section in the central bay. The entrance is located in a broad portico with three round arches on brick pillars with hardstone bases. The arches have the same sandstone surround as the aforementioned windows.
The rear facade has more austere detailing; waistbands on consoles separate the floors; the windows are as in the other facades. A high-built central section gives rhythm to the facade and contains on the ground floor a second entrance, which provides access to the stairwell. The end facades of the north and south facades have blind windows.
