The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 2: WATERTOREN (De Oude Molen 1).

Inleiding

Waardering

De watertoren is van algemeen belang:

- als historisch functioneel onderdeel van het complex;

- vanuit architectuurhistorisch oogpunt als gaaf bewaard gebleven en zeldzaam geworden fabriekswatertoren;

- door de ensemblewaarde vanwege de functionele relatie tot de overige objecten van het voorterrein;

Description of component 2: WATER TOWER (De Oude Molen 1).

Introduction

The WATER TOWER was built in 1895 according to the design of J.F. Klinkhamer and B.J. Ouendag during the first building phase of the newly established guncotton and nitroglycerin factory. This oldest nineteenth-century structure is located on the forecourt and connected to the laboratory (De Oude Molen 1). The factory possessed its own water distribution system, so that a constant water pressure was guaranteed for the production process at all times. Water was of great importance for rinsing and cooling the substances.

In the last decade of the twentieth century the water tower was internally rebuilt and fitted with meeting rooms. Moreover, this building component was connected to a glazed corridor so that it was accessible from other buildings.

Description

The striking tower, twenty metres high, forms the highest and most conspicuous building of the complex. The water tower is built on a circular ground plan and constructed of brickwork in Flemish bond. The body has window openings at different levels. On the north side there is a passage to the laboratory building and on the south side a passage to the glazed corridor. The superstructure of the water tower consists of a high reservoir around which an octagonal wooden enclosure has been placed. This enclosure is crowned by an eight-sided pitched roof with gently sloping roof surfaces. The roof overhangs the enclosure. At two levels hardstone consoles have been placed in the brickwork of the body, which may indicate a wooden gallery at the level of the wooden superstructure.

Various meeting rooms are accommodated in the body of the water tower.

Valuation

The water tower is of general importance:

- as a historically functional component of the complex;

- from an architectural history perspective as a well-preserved and rare factory water tower;

- through ensemble value on account of the functional relationship to the other objects of the forecourt;

- on account of the defining character value through the height, the characteristic silhouette and the striking placement on the factory premises.
