The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The double residential house with neo-gothic details was designed in 1875 by Amsterdam architect A.L. van Gendt. The client was Mr J. Harbrink-Numan, who had the property built as an investment object. He sold it to the Englishman Sciff, who named the dwellings 'London' and 'Evergreen'. The coach house at London, located to the left behind the property on the Gaslaan, still bears this name. The dwelling currently bears the name 'Dennenhorst'.

Description

The DOUBLE VILLA, situated parallel to the Eemnesserweg at the corner of the Gaslaan, is built on a rectangular plan and comprises two storeys under a gabled roof covered with ridge tiles and with the ridge parallel to the road. The dwellings are mirrored with respect to each other.

The front facade on the Eemnesserweg has a projecting top gable section under a gabled roof of equal ridge height, with the ridge perpendicular to the road. The facades are decorated with lisenes and corbels executed in white plasterwork. In the middle a neo-gothic half-column has been installed as a visual division between the two dwellings. The front facade has a symmetrical layout and facade articulation. The risalit contains twice two folding doors with fanlights on the first storey, twice two six-pane sash windows on the second storey and twice two lattice windows at the top. The top gable is crowned by openwork timber carving and a moulding. On either side of the risalit against the recessed facades a wooden conservatory under a flat roof has been placed. These contain windows and doors with yellow-coloured fanlights and lattice windows in the side facades. On the second storey there is a six-pane sash window above each conservatory. On either side of these windows the names of the villas are painted on the facade.

The left side facade contains in the middle the entrance and on either side a sash window. On the second storey there are two lattice windows with a small window placed between them. At the top three lattice windows have been placed.

The right side facade is identical to the left side facade.

The rear facade still retains in part the original windows and doors. On this side stained-glass windows of the stairwell are to be found.

The plan consists of a suite with the entrance flanked in the side facades by a former dining room and the former service rooms. In the front garden separated by a rounded arch gate stands a red beech.

Evaluation

The double villa is of architectural-historical value because of the building style, the details and its place in the oeuvre of architect A.L. Van Gendt. It is furthermore of value because of the integrity of the object.
