Inleiding
De Nederlandsche Telephoon Maatschappij (NTM) kreeg in 1890 een vergunning om in Baarn een telefoonnet te exploiteren. Hiermee was Baarn één van de eerste kleinere gemeenten die een aansluiting op dit net kreeg. Als schakel in de verbinding Amsterdam-Arnhem kwam achter het Baarnse station een kleine telefooncentrale te staan. Nadat de staat in 1897 het interlokale net had overgenomen, legde de maatschappij zich uitsluitend toe op de exploitatie van het lokale telefoonnet in Baarn. De NTM kreeg in 1902 een concessie voor 25 jaar en verplaatste toen het chaletgebouwtje naar de huidige plek aan de Eemnesserweg. Mogelijk werd toen de lokale centrale uitgebreid. Het gebouwtje deed als zodanig dienst tot 1924.
Het pand heeft thans een woonbestemming. In 1992 is het pand aan de achterzijde met een aanbouw uitgebreid. Deze aanbouw valt buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving
De evenwijdig en vlak aan de Eemnesserweg gelegen voormalige TELEFOONCENTRALE is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag onder elkaar kruisende, overstekende zadeldaken, gedekt met shingles. De daklijsten van de topgevels zijn voorzien van bewerkte, uitgezaagde windveren en een makelaar. De gevels zijn voorzien van een vakwerkindeling met geprofileerde regels en stijlen. De vulling bestaat uit donkerrode strengperssteen. De vensters zijn voorzien van glas-in-lood.
De voorgevel is symmetrisch en bestaat uit een topgevel met een ingangspartij, bestaande uit een deur met zij- en bovenlichten. In de top is een venster gezet voorzien van een glas-in-lood bovenlicht met de letters `NTM'. De gevels aan weerzijden van de topgevel bevatten een in vakwerkstijlen geplaatst smal venster onder een ontlastingsboogje.
De linkerzijgevel heeft een driestrooksvenster met bovenlichten en een enkel venster. In de rechterzijgevel is een venster met tralies gezet. De beide topgevels hebben een venster met bovenlicht.
Waardering
Het pand is van cultuurhistorische waarde als zeldzaam en bijzonder overblijfsel van de ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis van de telefonie. Het is voorts van architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een bouwtype, het materiaalgebruik, de bouwstijl en de detailleringen.

Introduction
The Nederlandsche Telephoon Maatschappij (NTM) received a licence in 1890 to operate a telephone network in Baarn. This made Baarn one of the first smaller municipalities to gain a connection to this network. Description
The former TELEPHONE EXCHANGE situated parallel and close to the Eemnesserweg is constructed on a rectangular plan and comprises one storey beneath intersecting, projecting gabled roofs, covered with shingles. The roof lines of the gable ends are furnished with worked, cut-out bargeboards and a maiolica trim. The facades are provided with a timber-framing division with moulded rails and stiles. The infilling consists of dark red wire-cut brick. The windows are furnished with leaded glass.
The front facade is symmetrical and consists of a gable end with an entrance section, comprising a door with side and fanlight elements. In the gable is a window fitted with a leaded glass fanlight bearing the letters 'NTM'. The facades on either side of the gable end contain a narrow window placed within timber-framing stiles beneath a relieving arch.
The left side facade has a three-light window with fanlights and a single window. In the right side facade is a window with bars. Both gable ends have a window with fanlight.
Valuation
The building is of cultural-historical value as a rare and exceptional survival of the development history of telephony. It is furthermore of architectural-historical value as an example of a building type, the material use, the building style and the detailing.
