Inleiding
Het in 1858 gebouwde huizenblok bestaat uit zeven woningen en is opgetrokken in opdracht van Jhr. M.G. Faas Elias, eigenaar van de buitenplaats Schoonoord. De eerste steen is gelegd door ds. F.W. Merens. De woningen dienden tot huisvesting van gepensioneerd personeel. Door Jkvr. A. Faas Elias zijn de woningen gelegateerd aan de Hervormde Kerk, die ze verhuurde aan bejaarden.
Het blok is gelegen in een arbeiderswijk, die wordt gekenmerkt door een kleinschalige, dicht opeengeplaatste bebouwing. Het huizenblok is typerend voor armenzorgwoningen uit het midden van de negentiende eeuw.
Omschrijving
Het op een perceel tussen de Westerstraat en de Nieuw Schoonoordstraat gelegen blok BEJAARDENWONINGEN is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag onder een met gesmoorde verglaasde Hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak, met de nok evenwijdig aan de parallel lopende straten.
De voorgevel (zuid) aan de Nieuw Schoonoordstraat is symmetrisch van opzet en bevat veertien vensters met persiennes, voor iedere woning twee vensters. Boven de vensters zijn rechte strekken gemetseld. In het midden van de gevel is een accent aangebracht in de vorm van een timpaan met een rond venster. De geprofileerde daklijst wordt op de uiteinden gesteund door een geprofileerde console. In het dakvlak zijn zes niet oorspronkelijke dakkapellen aangebracht. Op de nok bevinden zich zeven schoorstenen.
De zijgevels zijn blind en voorzien van muurankers. De daklijst is voorzien van een makelaar en geschulpte windveren.
Tegen de achtergevel zijn uitbouwen geplaatst met de toegangen tot de woningen. Deze houten uitbouwen functioneerden als tochtportaal en klompenhok. Terzijde van deze toegangen bevindt zich respectievelijk een groot en een klein venster.
Parallel achter het woonblok staan zes bakstenen schuurtjes. De zevende, aan de linkerzijde, is vervangen door een garage, die buiten de bescherming valt. De schuurtjes zijn op een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken en tellen één bouwlaag onder een met gesmoorde Hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak met de nok evenwijdig aan de Westerstraat. De houten daklijsten hebben een tuitbeëindiging. De gevels naar het woonblok toe bevatten een houten lattendeur met links een vierruits draaivenster. De overige gevels zijn blind. De zijgevels zijn voorzien van muurankers.

The DWELLINGS FOR THE ELDERLY block, situated on a plot between the Westerstraat and the Nieuw Schoonoordstraat, is constructed on a rectangular ground plan and comprises one storey beneath a gabled roof covered with dampened glazed Dutch tiles, with the ridge parallel to the parallel-running streets.
The front facade (south) on the Nieuw Schoonoordstraat is symmetrical in layout and contains fourteen windows with shutters, two windows for each dwelling. Above the windows straight stretches of brickwork are laid. In the centre of the facade an accent is created in the form of a pediment with a round window. The profiled cornice is supported at the ends by a profiled console. In the roof plane six non-original dormers are installed. On the ridge there are seven chimneys.
The side facades are blind and provided with ornamental wall anchors. The cornice is provided with a cyma and sculpted wind vanes.
Against the rear facade extensions are placed with the entrances to the dwellings. These wooden extensions functioned as a draught vestibule and clog storage. Alongside these entrances there is respectively a large and a small window.
Parallel behind the residential block stand six brick sheds. The seventh, on the left-hand side, has been replaced by a garage, which falls outside the protection. The sheds are constructed on a rectangular ground plan and comprise one storey beneath a gabled roof covered with dampened Dutch tiles with the ridge parallel to the Westerstraat. The wooden cornices have a spout gable termination. The facades facing the residential block contain a wooden latticed door with on the left a four-pane casement window. The remaining facades are blind. The side facades are provided with ornamental wall anchors.
