Omschrijving complexonderdeel 1

Description component 1

The COUNTRY HOUSE built between 1910 and 1912 after a design by Ed. Cuypers is constructed with seventeenth and eighteenth century North German motifs. This is particularly evident in the stepped gables. The tower is characterized by Bavarian influences. The brick architecture displays characteristics of the Amsterdam School. In the interior, influences from K.F. Schinkel and French Louis styles have been used. Through the terrace, the staircase and the garden layout, a unity is created between the architecture of the garden and park and the house. The country house, situated parallel to and approximately 150 metres from the road, lies somewhat elevated on a hill and has an essentially T-shaped floor plan. The building has three storeys beneath a composite hipped roof covered with slate. The second storey is the piano nobile. The front facade has a symmetrical arrangement and layout. The observation tower on the left side facade forms the visual break in this symmetry. Corner and end stones, mouldings and balustrades are of natural stone. Yellow Bavarian granite (Waldstein) has been used for the plinth, Medarder sandstone for the remaining parts. The windows are partly pseudo-cross windows and have fanlights with glazing bars.

The front or south facade has a stepped gable accentuating the central section and two projecting stepped gables at both ends. Across the full width of the central section is a terrace at the level of the first storey. The terrace rests on brick pillars and also serves as a covering for the carriage drive that runs in front of the house. A double staircase leads to the garden layout in front of the house. On the pillars of the splaying staircase are placed shield-bearing lions. Against the first two storeys of the flanking stepped gables are three-sided bay windows, which also serve as a balcony for the third storey. The balcony doors have semicircular fanlights with natural stone surrounds. The left stepped gable has a relief above the attic window with a steamship as a symbol of modern shipping. The right stepped gable has a relief with a galleon as a symbol of shipping from the past. In the middle stepped gable are the alliance coats of arms of the families Van den Bosch and Van Hardenbroek in relief. The middle stepped gable has three window bays. In the middle against the third storey is a balcony. The balcony doors have an arched upper rail. Below it, in the second storey, is the main entrance of the house. On either side of the stepped gable, the facade likewise has three bays. The windows in the third storey have a semicircular surround. In the second storey there are double doors opening in the middle. In the third storey the middle is formed by a slightly recessed balcony door with a small balcony. The gutter rests on corbels and various roof dormers are incorporated in the roof pitch.

The left side facade or west facade is dominated by a square observation tower with double doors and balconies. Below it are narrow light windows in the facades. The tower is covered by a dome roof with a weathervane in the form of a ship. Against the main volume of the west facade is a double staircase leading to the entrance located in the second storey. This has double doors and a fanlight. Above it is a balcony with a balcony door. Above that is a round window placed in the rising masonry of the tower. To the right a bay window is set against the facade.

Against the right side facade or east facade is placed a bay window with an extension. The bay window also serves as a balcony. In front of the facade is a terrace at the level of the first storey. The rear facade of the main volume has at both ends a stepped gable with a similar finish as on the front facade. Against this facade in the middle is a wing of two storeys. Originally this part contained the kitchens (on the ground floor) and the dining hall (on the upper floor). The wing consists of a connecting element with quarter-round linking components that provide light to the stairwell and the hall. The connecting element links the main volume with the wing containing the dining hall. This building volume is symmetrical in arrangement and has at the east and west sides at the ends two stepped gables. These all contain a cross window. The east facade has double doors opening and a balcony. Between the stepped gables a chimney is placed against the west facade. The north facade has a semicircular extension with natural stone columns, which carry a semicircular entablature. Around this is a double staircase with inward and outward curving balustrades.

The T-shaped floor plan is characterized by a central hall around which the principal rooms are grouped. The arrangement of the interior is partly still original. The first storey contains the entrance for visitors who arrived by car. Via the vestibule and the hall one reaches the stairwell to the piano nobile. The remaining rooms on the first storey contain the service rooms for staff. The kitchen is housed in the north wing. The piano nobile is located on the second storey. The central section of the main volume is characterized by the hall. In the northwest corner is the stairwell. The north wing is accessible from the hall via a number of steps and offers access via a corridor to the dining hall. This hall has a fireplace and wood panelling from the demolished house 'De onbeschaamde' in Dordrecht. On the south side of the main volume are two important rooms: the gentlemen's room combined with a billiards room and the drawing rooms. The third storey has a landing around the square void of the hall. The arrangement of this floor has been largely altered. Originally the bedrooms were located here.

Valuation component 1

The country house is of cultural-historical value as an example of an early twentieth-century country estate. The building is of architectural-historical value because of the building style, the detailing and the use of materials, the arrangement and layout of the floor plan and its place in the oeuvre of Ed. Cuypers. The building is of situational value in relation to the garden layout.
