Landhuis
Omschrijving

Description
Country House
Description
A detached COUNTRY HOUSE situated parallel to the road, of two storeys on a rectangular ground plan, beneath a composite and flattened hipped roof covered with slates in overlapping Dutch bond. All facade sides have a broad, profiled wooden drip moulding beneath the gutter. The house is built in a traditional style with elements from the Renaissance (cross windows) and Classicism (symmetry and pediment). The house is accessible via a drive on the right side of the plot. Most windows are of the cross window type with half shutters, and the upper half features glazing bars or leaded glass divisions. Above the windows are stretches of natural stone relieving and through stones set in mortar. The south or front facade has a symmetrical arrangement of five window bays. The corners of the front facade are provided with rusticated corner pilasters in ashlar masonry. The facade has a mortared plinth above which a filler course is set. The facade termination is decorated with a continuous, profiled wooden cornice below which a dentil moulding is applied directly beneath the roof gutter. On the central axis is a risalit with pediment termination. On the inner side of the pediment is a dentil moulding applied. Before the central risalit is a stone steps entrance platform comprising three steps with an open portico provided with six wooden Tuscan columns that support a balcony with balustrade railings. A door with fanlight below the balcony provides access to the steps and is flanked by a narrow window with leaded glass fanlight. The balcony is entered via a double door with two-part leaded glass fanlight, which has been given on either side a narrow window with leaded glass fanlight. The double balcony door and aforementioned windows are separated from one another by pilasters beneath a natural stone lintel that serves as a cornice. The four pilasters possess simple natural stone capitals. In the pediment is a round tilting window. Against the side facades a one-storey extension was added in 1912 provided with a balcony with balustrade. The left extension has a composite window arrangement consisting of a double door with side and fanlights between Tuscan half-columns. The right extension has a more closed facade and is provided with a cross window. The rear facade has an almost identical main form as the front facade, with the difference that the total facade length has become seven window bays wide due to the 1912 extension. The risalit has a greater projection on this side and the corners of the risalit are provided with rusticated pilasters. Below the balcony, which also rests here on six columns, is the main entrance. On the floor of the risalit is a composite, Serliana-like window that consists of a double balcony door with a round-arched fanlight and is flanked by a narrow window with a leaded glass fanlight. Four mortared pilasters carry, in conformity with the south facade, a natural stone lintel through which the aforementioned round-arched window extends. On either side of the round-arched window is a natural stone plaque with 'ANNO' (left) and 'MCMVI' (right). The pediment contains a round tilting window. On either side of the risalit is, between the first and second window bay and between the fourth and fifth window bay, a rusticated pilaster. Originally against both side facades were one-storey extensions provided with a balcony with balustrade. In 1912 these extensions were raised by Hanrath to two storeys in identical style and provided with a hipped roof, the ridge of which is perpendicular to the main volume. A number of surviving interior elements are of significance and also fall under protection. The kitchen on the ground floor is in virtually original condition. The tiled walls feature two depictions of vases with flowers and one depiction of a bird cage. In the kitchen are moreover two wooden display cabinets with fluted corner posts and lower units with panelled doors. A number of rooms have stucco ceilings with neoclassical style influences. Furthermore of significance are various profiled door surrounds in neoclassical manner and a retractable sun blind with mechanical pulley system (W.H.M. Schol, Amsterdam) in the half-storey of the stair landing. Also of significance are the neoclassically detailed fireplaces in the former conservatory and the boudoir with ceiling stucco work in Tudor style in the former gentleman's room. In the draught vestibule at the main entrance are two tile tableaux with depictions of 17th century ships 'De Hoop' and 'De zeven Provinciën'. The large fixed wooden cupboard decorated with garlands with pediment termination and mirrored door on the first floor is a valuable remnant of the original interior. The current ground plan arrangement, consisting of a grouping of rooms around a central stairwell in the English manner, differs hardly at all from that of 1912. The entrance with a vestibule opening onto the centrally located hall is original. The rooms around it are still according to the original layout, but now have an office function. The country house is centrally located in the park. Before the building lies a sunken open grass area. From the house an axial view extends to the Amersfoortseweg.
Valuation
The country house Huis Ter Wege from 1905 with extension from 1912, is of architectural-historical value as an example of traditional building style and because of the original detailing of the interior. The country house is also of value as a component in the oeuvre of architect J.W. Hanrath, as well as of ensemble value within a park layout as part of the former country estate Ter Wege.
