Inleiding

Introduction

Former CONVENT of the order of the Dominican Sisters, built in 1881 in neo-Renaissance style. Since approximately 1968 the building has been in use as a cultural centre. The southern gable end was re-pointed approximately 1925. The extension to the right at the rear (southwest) also dates from 1925 and is likewise protected. The building is prominent in position on the east side of the Brink and together with the former girls' school (Brink 27), the St. Jansbasiliek (Brink 31) and the parsonage (Brink 33) forms a monumental facade wall along the Brink.

Description

Convent built on a rectangular ground plan, comprising two storeys under a recessed gabled roof with black Dutch tiles. The ridgeline runs north-south. The building is constructed in red brick in English bond, finished with a struck joint, above a projecting plinth with a sloped base. At the height of the lower sills of the windows a continuous denticulated band is provided, at the height of the upper sills a sawtooth moulding. Ornamental wall anchors are visible at various places in the brickwork of the front facade, while bar anchors appear in the other facades. Unless otherwise stated, the window axes contain rectangular wooden cross windows or sash windows with brick lintels and a relieving arch with a recessed arched field. The cross windows have opening lights in the lower sections with six-pane glazing bars, the fanlights have eight-pane glazing bars. The sash windows have sliding sections with six-pane glazing bars and a fanlight with likewise six-pane glazing bars.

The front facade (W) has a width of ten window axes. The emphasis is on the two central window axes which are contained in a pavilion of two storeys that is terminated by a stepped gable under a recessed gabled roof. The pavilion contains on the ground floor on the left a rectangular entrance with two eight-pane fanlights, on the right a cross window. Next to the entrance is a sandstone facade stone with the text "FIRST STONE LAID BY G. HARTMAN PASTOR AND THE CHURCH COUNCIL 11 June 1881". On the first floor two cross windows are installed with a pointed arch-shaped arched field. In the stepped gable above a denticulated band are two small arched six-pane windows. The steps of the stepped gable are finished with saddle-back finials. On either side of the central pavilion is a facade section the width of four window axes, which on the ground floor each contain a cross window with a basket-arch-shaped arched field and on the first floor a sash window with a round arch. The lower sections of the cross windows are provided with shutters. The facade sections on either side of the pavilion are terminated by a wooden gutter-board above a sawtooth moulding.

The right side facade (S) is built in running bond and has wall buttresses at the corners. The gable end has a width of two window axes, which on the ground floor each contain a cross window as in the front facade, on the first floor a sash window with a pointed arch-shaped arched field. Between the windows of the first floor is a pointed arch window installed with three leaded lights. The facade is terminated by a spout gable with shoulder pieces and saddle-back finials. At the height of the shoulder pieces is a denticulated band on which two pointed arch-shaped arched fields rest. At the top is a pointed arch-shaped spare field with a rectangular wooden two-light window.

To the right of the gable end is a single-storey extension on a rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof with black Dutch tiles and an east-west running ridgeline. The ridgeline is intersected by a brick chimney with saddle-back finial. The extension is built in running bond. The long south side of the extension is reinforced with three wall buttresses and has a width of seven window axes. The leftmost axis contains a pointed arch-shaped portico with a rectangular clipped door and two side lights, the other axes are grouped in threes and each contain a pointed arch window. The facade is terminated by a double sawtooth moulding under a wooden gutter. The eastern gable end of the extension contains on the ground floor a rectangular wooden window with two opening lights, in the roof storey a clipped door with a pointed arch-shaped arched field above. The gable end is terminated by a spout gable with saddle-back finial. The northern long side of the extension is obscured from view by (unprotected) extensions and an (unprotected) roof dormer.

The rear facade (E) has on the far left the single-storey extension. In the middle is a projecting structure on a rectangular ground plan, terminated by a flat roof with a brick parapet. This projecting structure contains four large six-pane sash windows and one double panelled door, originally all with a basket-arch-shaped arched field above. On the right is the single-storey extension of the former chapel with a rectangular ground plan and five-sided apse. The chapel has a gabled roof with five-sided termination and is covered with slates in Maas covering. On the ridge angle of the apse stands a pinnacle with an iron cross. The chapel was originally provided with pointed arch windows with leaded lights (which are now boarded up with wood). The first floor of the rear facade originally had a width of eight window axes, each containing a four-pane sash window with a basket-arch-shaped arched field.

The left side facade (N) has on the ground floor two window axes, each with two coupled windows with round arch-shaped cylindrical forms above. On the first floor are a six-pane and a four-pane sash window. In the gable end is a rectangular (boarded-up) window with a pointed arch-shaped arched field. The detailing of the gable end is the same as that of the right gable end.

Valuation

The former convent is of general importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as an externally well-preserved example of a convent from the fourth quarter of the 19th century, in neo-Renaissance style. In addition, the building has situational and ensemble value by virtue of its urban-planning prominent position on the east side of the Brink, together with the former girls' school (Brink 27), the St. Jansbasiliek (Brink 31) and the parsonage (Brink 33).
