Omschrijving onderdeel 2
HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG. Het park in landschapsstijl van Welgelegen werd omstreeks 1832 aangelegd toen het huis door de nieuwe eigenaar Willem van der Muelen (1787-1847) aan de achterzijde met een nieuwe classicistische vleugel werd uitgebreid. Het relatief kleinschalige park werd op deze vleugel georiënteerd en bestaat uit een kleine en erachter gelegen grote ovaalvormige open ruimte (gazon) waar omheen in landschappelijke trant heesters (Rododendron, Hulst, Taxus) en bomen (Kastanje, Plataan, Linden, Beuk, Sophora japonica - thans een van de drie bewaarde Honingbomen in Nederland -, Sneeuwklokjesboom, Lariks, verschillende andere Naaldbomen) zijn geplant, deels als groep, als solitair en als omlijsting, waardoor een naar buiten toe besloten parkcompositie werd bereikt. Het park wordt door een kleinschalig patroon van slingerpaden doorsneden (deels oorspronkelijk en deels in het begin van de 20ste eeuw aangelegd), die voorts langs twee strategisch in de ruimtelijke opzet van het park geplaatste tuinpriëlen voeren. Aan de zuidzijde bevindt zich vanouds het nutstuingedeelte van de aanleg, waarvan de inrichting thans voor de bescherming van ondergeschikte betekenis is. Dit geldt eveneens voor de smalle en lange open ruimte aan de westzijde waarvan de inrichting van recente datum is en die voor de aanleg als groenbuffer van waarde is.

De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG is in cultuurhistorisch en architectonisch opzicht van algemeen belang:

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The landscape-style park of Welgelegen was laid out around 1832 when the house was extended at the rear by its new owner Willem van der Muelen (1787-1847) with a new classical wing. The relatively small-scale park was oriented towards this wing and consists of a small and a rear large oval-shaped open space (lawn) around which shrubs (Rhododendron, Holly, Yew) and trees (Chestnut, Plane, Linden, Beech, Sophora japonica - now one of the three preserved Honey trees in the Netherlands, Snowbell, Larch, various other Conifers) have been planted in a landscape manner, partly as a group, as solitary specimens and as screening, thereby achieving a spatially enclosed park composition. The park is crossed by a small-scale pattern of winding paths (some original and some laid out in the early 20th century), which furthermore lead along two garden pavilions strategically placed in the spatial layout of the park. On the south side there has always been the utility garden section of the layout, whose present design is of secondary importance for the protection. The same applies to the narrow and long open space on the west side, whose design is of recent date and which serves the layout as a green buffer.
Valuation
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general interest from a cultural-historical and architectural point of view:
