Omschrijving onderdeel 1

Description of component 1

On a rectangular ground plan, partly cellared MAIN BUILDING House Welgelegen roofed with old-Dutch tiled hipped roofs. The complex structure of the house can be explained by different building phases and its various functions. The history of the house dates back at least to the sixteenth century; in a deed from 1571 there was a farmstead with a horse mill situated at this location. In a deed from 1650 the complex is referred to as an inn "where the horse mill is displayed". At that time the house probably consisted of a (double) transverse house with an adjoining farm. This layout of a double transverse house with adjoining farm is still visible in the roof truss structure of two hipped roofs connected along their long sides on the north side and in the half-hipped roof on the south side in appearance and in construction. Around 1870, when a girls' boarding school was established at Welgelegen, the northern part of the farm was raised to the level of the double transverse house, creating a broad new eastern facade. Earlier still, in 1832, when the house lost its function as an inn and became a country house, an entirely new wing was built on the west side in classical style with a centrally located recessed portico. The uniform arrangement of the north facade with empire windows and the making of the roofs of the original double transverse house on the northeast and west sides into a single pseudo truncated hipped roof probably date from this time. North side: partly plastered (left half) and partly red-brick facade with ground floor. On the left 3 empire 6-paned sash windows and on the first floor 3 empire 4-paned sash windows. In the right section two blind window bays on the ground floor and on the first floor on the left a 4-paned empire sash window. On the north side three building sections can be distinguished: the side facades of the transverse house, plastered around 1832 to form a uniform facade section (right), the likewise plastered facade section of the boarding school built around 1870, the rear in red brick built part of the side facade of the farm. The right section shows somewhat from the centre the entrance door accessible via a hard stone stoop of 3 steps, provided with a double fanlight and framing by pilasters and cornice. On either side an empire 6-paned sash window with shutters. On the first floor on the right an empire 4-paned sash window with shutters and somewhat left above the entrance door an oval double window with 12-paned glazing. The middle section shows on the right its own entrance preceded by a brick stoop of two steps with 2-paned fanlight and to the left of this four 6-paned sash windows. On the first floor on the right a 6-paned sash window with shutters and on the left 3 small 8-sided windows. The farm section has again on this side an entrance with 2-paned fanlight. Central in the rear (south) facade of the farm the arched building trace of a stable door, since the 19th century filled in with brick and provided with a door with fanlight. To the left of this an 8-paned and a 20-paned window and at the far left an arched door. The west facade of the farm built in red brick shows on the left side a door bay with a window to the left and three multi-paned windows on the right situated at unequal positions. On the first floor the facade section raised during the boarding school period, plastered and built out on the left, with on the right a 4-paned sash window with shutters and to the left of this two 6-paned sash windows, of which the right one is likewise provided with shutters. On the ground floor on the left side a simple entrance door. The plastered south side of the original transverse house adjoining this at right angles shows on the ground floor and on the first floors an irregular arrangement of multi-paned windows. The west facade of the section built in 1831 has a plastered projecting centre section that is raised above the roof line and has its own cornice. The facade section is built in red brick on either side and is terminated by plastered corner pilasters encompassing the side facades. The front and side facades of these wings are ended by a cornice. Central in the western projecting section the recessed glazed 4-paned door preceded by a stoop of two steps with semi-circular fanlight. On either side two empire 6-paned sash windows. On the first floor five empire 4-paned sash windows. The right side of this wing shows on the ground floor a double glazed 4-paned door with shutters and on the first floor a T-window with shutters.
