Inleiding

Component 12

Introduction

SERVICE DWELLING with small tower staircase, positioned against a dune slope, forming part of the historic country estate Koningshof. The dwelling was built in 1899-1900 according to a design by A. Salm. The service dwelling is situated at a considerable distance north of the main building and the porter's lodge. The service dwelling is visible from the Duinlustweg, from where a rising path leads to the object.

Description

Service dwelling built principally on a rectangular ground plan consisting of ground floor and attic storey. The rectangular main volume is varied on the south side by an extended volume, consisting of a taller tower staircase which transitions into a lower, at right angles to the main form positioned extension under a gabled roof. The main form is topped by a gabled roof with mansard sections at the height of both roof angles. The extension has a smaller gabled roof at the height of both roof angles. The tower staircase has a tall rising mansard roof with shingles in red mastic and leaden finial with weathervane. The gabled roofs are overhanging and provided with carved wind braces which at the height of the roof angle rest on carved consoles. In the peaks of the main roof the wind braces are connected to each other by wooden stiles and decorative work. The gabled roofs are covered with red tuiles du Nord. In the ridge of the main roof is a chimney.

The masonry is built in orange-red brick above a rendered plinth in darker brick. At the bottom the masonry has a slightly rendered plinth which via a bevelled roll course transitions into the overlying masonry. The bevelled roll course has natural stone blocks at the corners. Above the windows are lintels. Below the windows drip mouldings in darker brick.

The front (E) has the form of a pointed gable. The ground floor has a centrally placed six-part window frame with three two-pane sash windows and leaded glass in the three fanlights. The window frame is positioned in a slightly rendered bay-like section below with a roof covered in slate in Maas covering. The top of this covering coincides with the drip moulding of a cross window of the attic storey.

The rear (W) is in main form and window placement the same as the front. However, there is no bay-like extension. Differing from the front is also an arched spandrel with decoration in neo-Gothic style which is positioned above the six-part window frame. The right side (N) is entirely blind.

The left side (S) is extended with the aforementioned square tower staircase which transitions into a lower and projecting cross volume. At the bottom on the east side of the tower staircase is the panel door which forms the main entrance to the dwelling. Above this entrance is a canopy resting on two wooden consoles covered with slate in Maas covering. Against the south side of the tower is a stepped buttress in which natural stone blocks are incorporated. The apex of the tower is connected to the main roof via a mansard section. In the south wall of the tower and the connecting masonry with the cross volume are three small four-pane windows. The cross volume has four-pane sash windows in the east and south facades. In the west facade is a wooden door.

Valuation

The service dwelling is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical viewpoint as a historic-functional component of the historic country estate Koningshof, which in architecture forms a unity with the other buildings by architect A. Salm on this country estate and as an example of a service dwelling dating from around 1900 in a traditionalist building style.
