Inleiding

Introduction

In 1904 this observation tower was built by Leusden architect J. Pothoven Azn. at the commission of bailiff H.G. van Dam. He had purchased a large heathland area, on which he also had the nearby cupola on an artificially raised mound built by the same architect. Both objects belonged to the now-disappeared estate Lombok. A plaque in the west façade of the tower states that twelve-year-old Cornelis van Dam laid the foundation stone on 10 May 1904.

The observation tower was built at the end of the Lomboklaan which runs at right angles up the south slope of the Heuvelrug. Originally it was possible to look from the tower in the direction of Broekhuizen. Nowadays the view is obscured due to the high vegetation. The tower is also called the 'Uilentoren', because four owls crown the corners of the tower. The tower has been in the possession of the municipality of Leersum since 1926.

Description

An OBSERVATION TOWER located at the end of the Lomboklaan on a square base from 1904. Both base and tower are constructed of brick and finished with gravel cement. The open structure on three sides is provided with a platform which is accessible via a flight of stairs.

The tower has a smaller square ground plan and is opened out on the south, west and east sides with a round arch. The round arch on the south side has a keystone with a mask. The round arches rest on square piers which at the level of the capitals are connected to each other by means of a tie-rod. In the spandrels of the round arches a simple surface filling is made, above which a frieze with a projecting cornice.

The north side of the tower is closed off. Between the back wall of the tower and the wall in front of it, between which the stairs to the platform lead, is a space which is now closed. Older photographs show a closed round arch-shaped passage, above which a plaque has been placed. A still-existing narrow window in the form of a shooting aperture in the west façade lights this space. This opening functioned as a dovecot.

On the south side, between the piers, a fence is placed which is built up from mortared uprights with flat plaster on which a coarse plastered coping is fixed.

On the right side of the tower is a parapet with castellated finish, along which is a passage to the space beneath the platform. In this space stands a stone bench.

On the left side is the above-mentioned mortared flight of stairs with castellated parapet which continues around the left back corner further upward and finally reaches a platform. The parapet of the platform is provided with crenellations. On the four corner piers stands an abstracted cement owl.

Valuation

The observation tower from 1904 is of architectural-historical value as an example of a well-preserved building type as well as of cultural-historical value because of its history of origin in relation to the development of the heathland area at the time which was reclaimed around 1904 by afforestation. As well as of ensemble value as an important early twentieth-century object in a villa district with predominantly 1950s and 1960s architecture. In this respect also of value in relation to the cupola at Lomboklaan 35, with which a close stylistic affinity exists.
