The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

In 1904, this cupola was built at the commission of bailiff H.G. van Dam from Wijk bij Duurstede. The design is by Leusden architect J. van Pothoven Azn. The cupola has strong stylistic affinity with the Uilentoren located at the Lomboklaan, which was also built by van Pothoven in the same year. Both objects were part of the estate Lombok which was founded by H.G. van Dam at the beginning of the twentieth century and could be visited by the public. In 1926 the cupola was sold to a private individual, whilst the Uilentoren came into the possession of the municipality of Leersum.

The cupola, also called the Peperbus, was built on an artificially raised mound. The Leersum population was encouraged by the master of the estate to dump their waste on a heap here. During or before the Second World War the mound would have been excavated to serve as storage space. This space is now bricked up.

In old photographs the cupola has a spherical finial with pointed protrusions as a crown.

Description

A CUPOLA located on the property of Lomboklaan 35, built in 1904 on an artificially raised mound, which is entirely planted with shrubs, whereby the later-added storage space is hidden from view. The entrance is now bricked up. The cupola has a round ground plan and consists of one storey under a wooden cupola roof clad with zinc. The inside of the cupola is not lined, whereby the ribs and wooden cladding remain visible. The brick façade is finished with gravel cement both on the outside and inside. Below the roof edge the façade projects slightly (ogee moulding). On the south side the façade is opened out by means of three coupled round arches. The two round columns are also finished with gravel cement. The cupola is accessible via a stone, now greatly neglected, flight of stairs.

Valuation

The cupola is of architectural-historical value as an example of a building type as well as of cultural-historical value as a former part of the disappeared estate Lombok. Also of ensemble value in relation to the nearby Uilentoren, with which close stylistic affinity exists.
