Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The HISTORICAL PARK LAYOUT (2) belonging to the historic country estate Beukenhorst in Landscape style designed around 1861 by German architect C.E.A. Petzold with accompanying GARDEN LAYOUT in Neo-Classical style inspired by Pompeian examples, which was designed circa 1845 by H.H.A. Wentzel for the country estate Beukenhorst. It forms part of an almost completely wooded beach ridge on both sides of the Rijksstraatweg, on which a landed estates zone has developed since the 17th century. It lies within the protected village view proposed in the context of the MSP. Until 1845 the wood was used as an overflow area from the country estate Langenhorst opposite. Petzold made use of the natural condition of the terrain in his design. At that time, the open space around the house was arable land with a finch trap. A remnant of the existing elongated water feature, which runs at the level of the coach house up to the horse pasture, was also retained. The park layout is characterised by strong optical spatial effect, whereby the terrain appears larger than it actually is. This is achieved among other things through variation in the use of deciduous, coniferous trees and shrubs with different colour gradations and contrast formation between horizontal and vertical lines. An important element is the east-west running main axis on both sides of the house and the sequence of subordinate spaces, along which a circuit walk is possible. The climax is reached at the house. The characteristic enlargement of the space through the presence of a clear sightline from the house towards the Rijksstraatweg is limited. The park contains a wide variety of shrubs and deciduous and coniferous trees such as yew, box, holly, oak and beech trees.
Description
The landscaped park is accessible via a somewhat segment-curved approach drive from Zijdeweg and Rijksstraatweg, which is partly bounded by clipped yew and box shrubs. While retaining the shaded character of the wood, various open spaces have been created with the main space being the large lawn in the east-west running main axis to the east of the slightly elevated house. Most open spaces have a curved course and are surrounded by groups of trees and shrubs. The main axis to the west of the house is accentuated by the remains of the steps constructed from yellow brick with retaining walls, which lead to the large lawn. This open space has a somewhat lobed character due to indentations and projections with a copper beech and a pyramidal oak as striking elements. The vista flanked by monumental yews towards the Rijksstraatweg is limited by a screen of tall beech trees with rhododendrons in front, which create a coulisse effect. From the large lawn there is a vista in a northerly direction towards a meadow with two solitary monumental beeches. In a westerly direction there is a vista towards a slightly smaller open space, where a solitary oak stands. To the south of the former coach house and near a yew arbour, the outlines of a circular open space are vaguely recognisable, originally intended as a horse pasture. Several carefully rounded monumental yew and box shrubs on either side of a natural stone balustrade along the front forecourt contribute to the coulisse effect of the open space in the main axis to the west of the house. This lower-lying space, with a water feature added later in the middle, is closed off on the west side by yews and beech trees.
The original curved path pattern along the various atmospheric elements in the park is largely still present, or recognisable through delimitation with clinker bricks or shrubs. Striking sections of the path are those flanked by certain trees or shrubs. Thus to the north of the house there is a hazel arbour with a group of azaleas nearby. Parallel to the north boundary of the park lies a yew arbour with young planting. To the south of the western open space lies a hawthorn path and to the west of the approach drive there is a beech avenue. To the south of the former coach house it is vaguely recognisable where the elongated water feature with several projections - which ran in the direction of the horse pasture - was located.
Valuation
The historical park layout of the country estate Beukenhorst is of general interest due to cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning value; - as a well-preserved and easily recognisable example of a park in Landscape style from the third quarter of the 19th century designed by German landscape architect C.E.A. Petzold and as such important to his oeuvre; Characteristic of Petzold's oeuvre is the spatial composition with strong perspective effect in the composition of the components, the distinctive use of colour in the lobed-shaped planting and the strong visual relationship between the park layout and the house; - due to the spatial and functional coherence with the other complex components; - as part of the valuable landed estates zone on both sides of the Rijksstraatweg.
