Omschrijving
Inleiding
Synagoge gebouwd in 1878, in opdracht van het bestuur der Nederlands Israëlitische Gemeente te Emmen. In 1909 is een vierde travée aan het gebouw toegevoegd, waarin een balkon is aangebracht. Het is de enige synagoge in Drenthe waarvan het interieur nog geheel in oorspronkelijke staat aanwezig is.
In eigendom van de gemeente, niet meer in gebruik. Gerestaureerd in 1993. De bescherming betreft het totale bouwvolume waarin begrepen de detaillering van de gevels en het interieur met de volledige inventaris, tot en met de lampenkapjes.
Beschrijving
Eenvoudige bakstenen zaalkerk met een gepleisterd basement rondom, onder een zadeldak met pannen. Rondom een verkropte gietijzeren bakgoot.
Alle vensters zijn negenruits en hebben een spitsgebogen bovenlicht met dito roedenverdeling (tracering). De ramen zijn van gietijzer.
De westgevel is geheel gepleisterd in blokverband. Boven het basement twee vensters tussen hoekpilasters. In de geveltop met klimmend keperfries een roosvenster. Op de top een noksteen met obelisk.
Beide zijgevels zijn met pilasters in vier traveeën opgedeeld. In de westelijke travee aan beide zijden een paneeldeur met spitsgebogen bovenlicht. In de overige traveeën een spitsboogvenster.
De achtergevel (O) is blind boven het basement.
Interieur
Houten tongewelf met trekstangen. Tegen de oostwand de arke met de thorarollen in een portaal van halfzuilen waaraan het voorhangsel is bevestigd, bekroond door een rondboog tympaan. Het geheel op een bordes met drie treden, afgezet door houten balustrades waarop metalen lamphouders met glazen kapjes zijn aangebracht.
In het midden de houten biema met lezenaar. Houten balustrades met op de hoeken geëlectrificeerde kandelaars.
Aan de westzijde een balkon, op gietijzeren composiete kolommen, met de door gaaswerk afgezonderde vrouwengalerij.
Tegen de zijmuren houten banken. Aan de wanden twee marmeren gedenkplaten ('40-'45).

Synagoge van cultuur-, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig belang:

Introduction
Synagogue built in 1878, on commission of the board of the Nederlands Israëlitische Gemeente in Emmen. In 1909 a fourth bay was added to the building, in which a balcony was installed. It is the only synagogue in Drenthe of which the interior is still entirely in its original state.
Owned by the municipality, no longer in use. Restored in 1993. The protection concerns the total building volume including the detailing of the facades and the interior with the complete inventory, down to the lampshades.
Description
Simple brick hall church with a plastered basement all around, under a gabled roof with tiles. All around a bent cast-iron gutter.
All windows are nine-light and have a pointed arched fanlight with corresponding glazing bars (tracery). The frames are of cast iron.
The west facade is entirely plastered in block bond. Above the basement two windows between corner pilasters. In the gable top with climbing diagonal-bond frieze a wheel window. On the top a ridge tile with obelisk.
Both side facades are divided by pilasters into four bays. In the western bay on both sides a panelled door with pointed arched fanlight. In the remaining bays a pointed arch window.
The rear facade (E) is blank above the basement.
Interior
Wooden barrel vault with tie rods. Against the east wall the ark with the Torah scrolls in a portico of half-columns to which the hanging is attached, crowned by a round arch tympanum. The whole on a platform with three steps, set off by wooden balustrades on which metal lamp holders with glass shades are attached.
In the centre the wooden bimah with lectern. Wooden balustrades with electrified candelabras on the corners.
On the west side a balcony, on cast-iron composite columns, with the women's gallery separated by mesh work.
Against the side walls wooden benches. On the walls two marble memorial plaques ('40-'45).
