Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The former mayor's residence, principal component of the villa complex "Mariënhof", executed in eclectic style with influence of the Chalet style, has been largely preserved in its original state. Only the rear facade (N) underwent modifications to the positioning of windows at ground floor level. This occurred around 1930, when also the front and rear doors were replaced by contemporary examples. The middle mullion may also have disappeared from the lower lights of the windows at that time. The outer sides of the windows originally had straight wooden plates at the top behind which the drawn-up sun blind was located. The current owner (M.F. Dijkema, 1994) still owns one example. This example still has the original decoration and paintwork. The aforementioned modifications have not impaired the monumental character of the villa.

Description

Villa built on a rectangular ground plan - called "Mariënhof" - consisting of ground floor, first floor and attic storey under a gently sloping gabled roof. The roof is covered with red pan tiles. The roof resting on collar-ties has ample overhang and is oriented with the ridge line at right angles to the street. The villa stands on a foundation of vaulted brickwork. Against the northwestern corner is built an attached small rectangular volume under a gently sloping gabled roof with red pan tiles. The ridge line is parallel to that of the main roof. In this volume, which dates from the time of construction of the villa, the scullery was originally located. The brickwork is raised above a cemented plinth in red brick. For decoration the projecting corners and the projecting central section are provided with plasterwork with cut joints. At the level of the first floor is a cornice. The window and door openings have for the most part rounded upper corners in the front facade and both side facades and are provided with sash windows. Above these are plastered eyebrows with curved corners. These eyebrows have in the middle a female head and at both ends a small bracket-shaped decoration. The roof has for decoration cutwork under the weather vanes and gutter lines. Cutwork is also placed at the junction of the weather vanes above both gable tops (S, N). In the ridge line are two tall masonry chimneys with small caps whose ridge lines stand at right angles to those of the main roof. The front facade (S) is a richly decorated gable top with five window bays. In the central bay is the projecting central section containing the front door and above it a balcony with elegant wrought-iron railings on consoles decorated with caryatids. This balcony is accessed via double hinged doors with large glass panels and fanlight. Above this in the gable top is a small round window for lighting the attic storey. This window has a cross-shaped ornamental wrought-iron work and is situated above a plaque bearing the name "Mariënhof". The left side facade (W) forms a long side of the rectangle. In this facade the windows are for the most part of unequal size and irregularly placed in the wall surface. Below the cornice near the front facade are two windows identical to those in the front facade. To the north of this the facade has a wide frame with double hinged doors and fanlight. Between these doors and the attached volume against the northwestern corner is a smaller T-window. Above the cornice the brickwork has a window only above the double doors. This is a T-window with shutters. Near the corners the brickwork is decorated with plastered medallions. The attached volume has in the gable top a small round window that is in form identical to that in the gable top of the villa. The west side has a sash window with divided fanlight. The gable-end north side has a small four-pane window and the east side a segmental arched stable window. In the inside corner between the east side of the annexe and the north facade of the villa a wooden portico (not falling under the protection) was subsequently placed. The right side facade (O) has below the cornice at equal distance from each other three sash windows identical to those in the front facade. Above the cornice above each window is a plastered medallion. The rear facade (N) is a sober gable top with originally three window bays which are only completely preserved above the cornice. The central bay contains below the cornice a rear door and above it a balcony resting on simple consoles that cuts through the cornice. The balcony is accessed via double hinged doors. Above these doors is a facade stone with the date 1867. Above this in the gable top is a small round window with a simple diamond-shaped ornamental motif. The interior contains a central corridor with cast-iron rosettes in the ceiling. The corridor has on both sides doors through which all rooms are accessed. Also the simple spiral staircase to the first floor is reached via a door opening onto the corridor. Particular components are formed by two fireplaces, respectively in the front room to the right (E) of the corridor and in the back room to the left (W) of the corridor. Furthermore special stucco ceilings are present in the front and back rooms to the left of the corridor.

Valuation

The former mayor's residence "Mariënhof" dating from 1867 is of general importance because of architectural and cultural-historical value and as a historical-functional principal component of the villa complex.
