Omschrijving
Inleiding
Waardering
Het Rijksmuseum Twente is van cultuur-, architectuurhistorisch en stedebouwkundig belang vanwege;

Description
Introduction
The RIJKSMUSEUM TWENTE was built in 1929 after a design in traditionalist style by architects K. Muller and A.K. Beudt. The design of the hexagonal building around a large courtyard with a gate-like entrance on the Lasondersingel appears to be inspired by castles. The initiative to establish the museum came from J.B. van Heek who, however, died in 1923 before the plans took concrete form. In memory of J.B. van Heek, the family decided to proceed with the plan anyway. J.H. van Heek undertook the organization and was director of the museum until shortly before his death in 1957. The extension from 1938, on the north side of the original building, the detached house "Groot Bavel" and the office extension from the 1970s on the east side are of subordinate importance for the protection. In 1996, in particular the eastern (1938) section was altered, in that the courtyard of this section was covered. A new building component was also placed at the large courtyard; the eastern arm of the original section was left virtually untouched. The outdoor space in front of the main entrance, on the street, and the interior garden were redesigned. Some alterations were made to the original section from 1929: the galleries at the courtyard were closed in with glass; also at the courtyard in the upper section in the eastern corner the storey windows were closed in and on the ground floor the central window was altered.
The building stands on the Lasondersingel at the corner with the Blijdensteinstraat diagonally opposite the Lasonderkerk, also a national monument.
Description
The wings of the building are grouped in a hexagon around a courtyard. The facades are constructed in brown machine-made brick. The hipped and gabled roofs are covered with red and grey Dutch tiles and provided with small roof dormers and finials on the ridge. The main entrance of the museum is located in the building component placed transversely in relation to the Lasondersingel with two storeys and hexagonal corner towers.
The lower part of the symmetrical front facade is strongly horizontally articulated by the heavy plinth of Bentheimer sandstone, the joint courses and the continuous alternating brickwork of the ground floor windows. The entrance is located in the middle of the facade in a portico under a segmental arch with a natural stone moulding. The windows with leaded glass windows have a natural stone frame and are executed on the ground floor in the towers with fanlight and on either side of the entrance as cross windows. Against the rear facade of this building component on the courtyard a three-sided risalit under a hipped roof with a central exit to the courtyard. On the ridge of the steep hipped roof a roof superstructure under a pear-shaped roof.
The long L-shaped wings along the Lasondersingel and the Blijdensteinstraat have one storey under gabled roofs with ridge lines varying in height. The facades of the various halls in the wings also step back in relation to each other. This allows the interior layout to be read from the exterior. In the facade along the Lasondersingel generally cross windows, some with shutters. The facade of the hall for ecclesiastical art is three bays wide with pointed arch windows and gable tops under pent roofs. On the courtyard side, in the corner of the L-shaped wing there is a small tower and on either side an arcade under a lean-to roof. The stepped facade along the Blijdensteinlaan is virtually blind with arch friezes. Directly to the left of the entrance is the section where originally a dwelling was housed. The entrance under a canopy on columns is still present.
The entrance section finds its echo in the facade on the courtyard directly opposite. This section also has two storeys under a steep hipped roof and on either side two towers.
Valuation
The Rijksmuseum Twente is of cultural, architectural-historical and urban-planning significance because of:
- the relationship with the Enschede textile family Van Heek which founded the museum
- the distinctive design inspired by castles by architects K. Muller and A.K. Beudt
- the reasonable degree of external integrity of the building
- the characteristic location on the Lasondersingel opposite the Lasonderkerk, at the intersection with the Blijdensteinlaan
