Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The neo-Gothic BASILICA, "St. Jozef" was built in 1893-1894 according to a design by the architect J.Th.J. Cuypers in very close cooperation with the architect J. Stuyt, who worked at the office of P.J.H. Cuypers from 1891 to 1900. The rise of the labour movement in Enschede led to the establishment of the parish St. Jozef and the construction of the church which was consecrated on 25 September 1894 by Mgr. Petrus Matthias Snickers, Archbishop of Utrecht. The interior was created in different periods but nevertheless forms a harmonious unity despite the various styles. The stained glass in the windows was installed after the Second World War because the original glazing had been destroyed by bombing. The front facade (E) with the large tower adjoins the Oldenzaalsestraat. The Maria Chapel built onto the south side in 1953 is of subordinate importance for protection.
Description
Three-aisled basilica of seven bays with a large tower against the front facade (E) and a seven-sided choir closure at the rear (W). In line with the low side aisles with arched corbels on either side of the presbytery, the sacristy and the catechism room. The gabled roof above the nave, the lean-to roofs above the side aisles and the tower spires are covered with slate in Maas bond. The three-sided stair tower against the north wall of the tower is crowned by a spire covered with slate. To the left of the tower a five-sided baptismal chapel beneath with copper-covered tent roof. The facades are constructed in brown brick and articulated with buttresses. In all facades the stained glass windows beneath pointed arches are composed of two lancet windows and a rose window at the head. In the front and side facades of the tower heavy bolted doors with wrought-iron hinges. Above the side entrances windows with stained glass and moulded tracery beneath pointed arches. The church tower with corner listel is constricted at the height of the nave ridge. Above the constriction hexagonal corner turrets with pointed arch-shaped sound holes and spires. In the octagonal lantern sound holes beneath pointed arches and on the eight-sided steep spire on four sides clock faces beneath saddle roof-shaped canopies. The cross-rib vaults of the nave and side aisles are executed in fair-faced masonry. On the soffits of the moulded pointed transverse arches above the columns plastered with fake joints wall paintings of prophets. The false triforium with pointed arches is filled with a continuous painting of a landscape. On either side of the windows in the clerestory wall paintings of angels. The walls of the side aisles are plastered white between the listel executed in fair-faced masonry. The severely damaged wall painting on the rear wall of the choir probably dates from the period of construction. In the choir lies a tile floor with geometric patterns and a representation of St. Jozef with the dragon (1901). The Maria altar (1897), Joseph altar (1898), high altar (1908), triumphal cross (1913), two apostle figures at the new high altar and the two figures at the entrance were made by the workshop of F.W. Mengelberg. The remaining figures are by Ruller from Munster. The wall paintings in the nave and the side walls of the choir (1925) and the framed Stations of the Cross (1935) were created by Joan Collette. The hand-forged air crowns come from the Kirschbaum workshop in Munster and date from around 1918. The pieta (c. 1925), made from pierre de Caen comes from the ecclesiastical art workshop A. Ruller, also in Munster.
Assessment
Neo-Gothic basilica of cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning significance by virtue of:
- the connection to the rise of the labour movement in the textile city of Enschede
- the neo-Gothic building style which is characteristic of the nineteenth-century building explosion of Catholic buildings following the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1852
- the significance of the church as the first work of J. Stuyt in cooperation with J.Th. J. Cuypers
- the external integrity
- the interior which despite the different building periods nevertheless forms a special unity and contains some valuable interior components by various artists and workshops
- the dominant townscape setting with the high tower on the Oldenzaalsestraat
