Inleiding
Op initiatief van de vereniging De school met de bijbel werd in 1931 de "vierde SCHOOL met den bijbel" gebouwd aan het Elshofplein.
Tot 1886 werd lager onderwijs aan de verschillende gezindten voorafgegaan door en afgesloten met gebed en dankzegging door de schoolmeester. In de hogere klassen werd bijbelse geschiedenis uit het Oude en Nieuwe Testament onderwezen uit de werkjes van de r.k. geestelijke C. Schmidt, zowel aan protestanten, katholieken als joden.
Toen deze vakken in 1886 uit het lesprogramma verdwenen en de scholen neutraal werden, werd in hetzelfde jaar de Vereniging tot stichting en instandhouding van Scholen met de bijbel in Enschede en Lonneker, kortweg De school met de bijbel, opgericht en koninklijk goedgekeurd op 28 maart 1886. De eerste school werd gebouwd in 1891, de laatste was de Vierde School met den bijbel aan het Elshofplein. In totaal zijn vijf scholen gebouwd, waaronder ook een ULO met de bijbel.
De Vierde school met den bijbel is uitgevoerd in Amsterdamse Schoolstijl, met bijzondere aandacht voor kozijnvormen, materiaalbehandeling, detaillering en ornamentering. Aan de zuidzijde en op het binnenterrein is de school uitgebreid met een modern schoollokaal. Het interieur op de begane grond is gewijzigd. Thans heet de school De Elshof.
Voor de entree twee solitaire cypressen binnen de gemetselde erfscheiding.
Omschrijving
Schoolgebouw opgetrokken in bruine baksteen in Noors kettingverband over twee bouwlagen. De school bestaat uit twee haaks op elkaar staande langwerpige lokalengebouwen, verbonden door een entreepartij met trappenhuis. De lokalengebouwen onder schilddak zijn bedekt met zwarte Hollandse pannen. Op de nokeinden pironnen.
De overhoekse entree is geplaatst onder een halfronde luifel. Erboven, voor het trappenhuis, drie stroken met drielichten, bekroond met een zonnewijzer. Rechts van de entree een blinde gevel met in smeedijzeren letters: "Vierde school (horizontaal) met den bijbel (verticaal)". In de noord- en oostgevel van de entreepartij drie hoge vensters. In de oostgevel voor de vier lokalen grote drielicht vensters met meerruits bovenlichten en een doorlopende betonnen tussendorpel. Links is één lokaal aangebouwd onder een steekkap in dezelfde stijl en materialen. Hier eveneens een groot drielicht venster.
In de noordgevel op de begane grond vier laddervensters onder één doorlopende latei. Op de verdieping vier spitse paraboolvormige vensters met betonnen sluit- en aanzetstenen. Rechts om de hoek in de kopse westgevel een halfronde hoekrisaliet.
De gevels aan de binnenzijde hebben verschillende vensterpartijen en in de oksel een entree.
Van het interieur zijn enkele details bewaard gebleven, waaronder glas-in-lood vensters, kasten, tegellambrizeringen en -vloeren.

Description
School building erected in brown brickwork in Norwegian bond over two storeys. The school consists of two rectangular classroom buildings standing at right angles to each other, connected by an entrance section with stairwell. The classroom buildings with hipped roofs are covered with black Dutch tiles. Roof finials on the ridge ends.
The corner entrance is placed under a semicircular canopy. Above, for the stairwell, three strips with three-light windows, crowned with a sundial. To the right of the entrance a blank gable with cast-iron lettering: "Fourth school (horizontal) with the bible (vertical)". In the north and east gables of the entrance section three tall windows. In the east gable for the four classrooms large three-light windows with multi-pane fanlights and a continuous concrete intermediate lintel. On the left one classroom is attached under a stay roof in the same style and materials. Here also a large three-light window.
In the north gable on the ground floor four ladder windows under one continuous lintel. On the first floor four pointed parabola-shaped windows with concrete sill and soffit stones. To the right around the corner in the blind west gable a semicircular corner projection.
