Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1931 the architects H.W. Valk and J.M. Sluymer were commissioned to design a ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH (St. Jacobus the Greater). On the site on the south side of the Grote Markt stood previously a church of the same name from 1841/2 designed by Kram. This church was destroyed by fire in the city fire of 1862. In 1863 a neo-Gothic three-aisle basilica was built according to a design by Van de(n) Brink. This St. Jacobuskerk was in need of replacement in the 1920s. The commission stipulated a centralized structure with domes for, with the altar beneath the rear two domes, so that the congregation would have a view of the altar from three sides. The choice for the church typology and building style used can be seen in the light of dissatisfaction with the level of church construction in the twenties and the too strong stylistic influence of the Gothic. That a centralizing ground plan was chosen was the result of the liturgical renewal movement which strove for more active participation of churchgoers in the mass for which a more comprehensible space type was needed.
Architecturally the church is executed in neo-Romanesque style, albeit with the use of pointed arches, the spatial effect appears Byzantine.
The contractor was G. Ribberink from Hengelo. The foundation stone was laid by pastor W.A. Rademaker on the feast of St. Jacobus, 25-7-1932. The consecration took place on 29-6-1933 by the archbishop of Utrecht, Mgr. J.H.G. Jansen. The church bells date from 1958.
Description
Centralized church building with double dome on T-shaped ground plan built in hand-formed monastic brick. The domes are clad with copper. Structurally heavily loaded components are executed in tufa stone. The entrance with narthex stands as a flat and enclosed building volume in front of the actual church. From the building volume behind the entrance with narthex the internal structure of the church can be clearly read. This consists of two main domes, the transept arms and the half domes. The view from the Walstraat thus provides a quite different image than from the Markt.
The geometrically articulated front facade (O) is horizontally divided into three parts. The entrance is concealed behind a gallery of seven round arches. Above it three rose windows with geometric glazing bars and stained glass. Above the middle window a small gable with natural stone drip moulding, crowned with a cross, above the right one an attic with three round openings, crowned by a dome roof with cross.
To the left above the rose window, the bell tower with a round sound hole and the same termination as on the right.
The dome drums likewise have an attic zone with round windows. The gable tops of the transepts have natural stone drip mouldings crowned with a cross.
The interior is executed in exposed brickwork. The large dome above the nave has a melon vault with ribs which rest via a double squinch system on six columns. These are alternately built in brick and tufa stone and connected to one another by pointed arches with beading. In the dome round windows with stained glass.
The hexagon of the large dome is inscribed in a rectangle. The four remaining spaces are vaulted with 3/6 closed melon vaults with double ribs. The smaller dome above the choir is executed the same as the large dome but rests on four columns.
The transept arms on either side of the choir count three bays under cross vaults. In the gable ends rose windows with stained glass.
Along the nave and transept arms run side aisles. Squinches and ribs have tufa stone setting stones.
The original seating plan with benches has been preserved. The altar was replaced in 1963. Left at the back in the nave a pieta (1933) by Mari Andriessen, the Stations of the Cross in terracotta are by Charles Eijck. The calvary group by Leo Brom is a remnant of the original altar. The Sacred Heart altar from 1934 by Joep Nicolas in opaline glass became a Sacrament altar. The silver advisor's chain of Mgr. Dr. A. Ariëns is kept in a reliquary by W. Fitzthum.
