Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Boardinghouse with caretaker's dwelling, built in 1920 as a Christian Boardinghouse for boys for the Christian Lyceum located on the Lindenlaan in Zeist, designed by architect G. van Hoogevest. In 1933 the boardinghouse was extended with a director's dwelling, which was already provided for in the original design, thereby giving the building a symmetrical layout. The original main function of the building has never been lost, with the exception of the designation of the various rooms. Moreover, the building is in an almost entirely original state both internally and externally. The boardinghouse is constructed in a traditional building style with rich decoration in the manner of the Amsterdam School both in the exterior and interior. The decoration consists, among other things, of brickwork, terracotta sculptures, ornaments and tilework, all manufactured by W.C. Brouwer from Leiderdorp.
Description
BOARDINGHOUSE situated parallel to the road consisting of two storeys on a complex ground plan beneath a complex overhanging hipped roof, clad with dampened Dutch tiles. The roof slopes are broken at regular intervals by roof dormers. The ridge of the central section is higher than that of the wings and is crowned by an octagonal monumental chimney structure with a walkway.
The building has a symmetrical main layout consisting of a central section with wings, situated parallel to the Krakelingweg, to the ends of which dwellings have been built. These dwellings differ in terms of ground plan and facade construction.
The facades are arranged almost throughout with symmetry and contain various types of windows, all with frames with ears running along the top and windows fitted with leaded glass. Some windows are fitted with panel shutters or venetian blinds.
The projecting central section of the front facade or north facade is articulated by two tapering buttresses which are crowned below the eave line by terracotta sculptures in the form of stylised heads. The buttresses are flanked at the base by planters which bracket the three-step-high stoop leading to the entrance. This main entrance consists of a solid wooden door with windows in a recessed porch that is surrounded by a monumental terracotta string course. The keystone is fitted with a stylised sculpture, as are the corners of the porch executed in terracotta. The design of the keystone is almost identical to the facade decoration of the building 'Cultura' in The Hague (1921) by the same W.C. Brouwer. Between the decorations on the corners and the string course is a horizontal moulded profile. On either side of the porch are two small windows. This facade section further contains three-light windows.
The side facades of the projecting central section contain three-sided oriels as well as large half-windows in stained leaded glass. The wings contain four-light windows as well as projecting building elements beneath steeply pitched roofs with small windows.
The director's and caretaker's dwellings differ from each other in terms of ground plan layout and facade construction. In the front facade of the caretaker's dwelling is a blocked-in conservatory.
The rear facade of the boardinghouse is in terms of its main form in accordance with the front facade, except for both ends which have a risalit. The risalits are terminated by balconies on square brick pillars. The side facades of the risalits contain oriels. The buttresses between which these oriels are situated are crowned by terracotta animal figures. These represent capercaillies, pelicans, squirrels and ducks. The rear facade further contains mainly cross windows on the ground floor and two-light windows on the upper storey. The layout of the interior is still in an almost entirely original state. The ground floor consists of a vestibule, in which a double staircase is situated. Two doors give access to the hall, from which the conversation room behind it can be reached as well as the second conversation room and billiards room next to it. From the staircase two corridors lead to the spaces at the end of the wings, among which on the right side are the dining room, the cloakroom and the caretaker's dwelling and on the left side the director's dwelling. The storeys above contain the bedrooms and shower facilities.
The protection of the interior is limited to the ground floor. On the ground floor, besides the layout, the following elements are important. The corridors of the ground floor are fitted with red-black tile floors; the rooms contain the original wooden parquet floors. The walls in the entrance porch, the hall and the corridors are tiled with unglazed tiles with a convex surface (legume motif). The entrance is separated by swing doors with fittings in wood and chrome. In the staircase, tiled planters have also been installed. The stairs are of wood with matching balustrades and handrails. On the stair newels are wooden carved monkeys by the hand of W.C. Brouwer. The large half-windows are fitted with coloured geometric leaded glass. The hall is articulated by natural stone Tuscan columns and pilasters which are connected to each other by round arches. On the side of the staircase is a fireplace in the hall built in small handmoulded brick with ceramic cladding plates and rosette-shaped terracotta details. In the conversation rooms, the billiards room and the dining room, the ceilings with timber-clad steel beams are finished (main and secondary beams). The corbels are fitted with carved work in the form of legumes. The dining room contains an original fireplace and buffet. The cloakroom is also in its original state. This section contains glazed terracotta tiles as wainscoting. Also in the director's dwelling is an original fireplace.
Included in the inventory are the aforementioned monkeys which are displayed in the hall on the stair newels.
Valuation
The boardinghouse building with director's dwelling from 1920 is of architectural historical value because of the building type, the special terracotta ornamentation in both exterior and interior, the combination of traditional architecture with Amsterdam School elements as well as the integrity of both the exterior and interior. The building moreover has a high ensemble value because of its location in the wooded surroundings on the axis of a forest path that formed part of the layout of the seventeenth-century Zeist castle.
