Inleiding

Introduction

Villa Berkenhof, now called Wingerdhof, built in 1910 by architect J. Stuivinga as his own residence. The design shows influences of the English country house style and cottage style. In 1915 a bay window was added to the front facade. In 1918 an office/studio was built at the rear in the garden, also designed by Stuivinga, but this falls outside the protection. The property was among others inhabited by writer Anne de Vries, who wrote his most famous book "Bartje" in the wooden garden house. The property is surrounded by a garden, while Boulevard no. 18 was likewise designed by Stuivinga in cottage style.

Description

A VILLA parallel to the Boulevard on a nearly rectangular ground plan of one storey under a steeply rising half-hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the road. The roofs are covered with red Dutch tiles. The wooden frames, doors and windows are provided with glazing bars. The front or west facade contains in the centre a stepped gable section of two storeys, in front of which in 1915 a hexagonal bay window under a small hipped roof, covered with red slate and ridge cresting, has been set. Each side of the facade is provided with leaded glass windows between brick piers. The upper storey and the top are executed in timber framing, between which plastered brick is laid. The facade contains three glazed windows and an oeil-de-boeuf window at the top. To the right of the stepped gable the front facade contains a frame with door and three-part window with fanlight to the right. Above the arched door the building year 1910 is inscribed in the spandrel. To the left of the stepped gable the facade contains a cross window with glazing bars. On either side of the stepped gable section there is in the roof slope a small four-pane roof dormer. In the right roof slope of the stepped gable a small roof dormer was later added.

Against the right side facade is a three-sided bay window set with in front of it a terrace provided with stone piers under a flat roof, resting on wooden pillars. On the upper storey the facade contains three identical windows which are provided with blinds. Between the first and second storey there is a carved relief plaque of a pelican.

The main entrance to the residence is located in the left side facade. This is situated in an arched porch. The door has an arched spandrel in neo-Louis XIV style, above which there is a fanlight with carved acanthus leaves. The upper storey facade has three identical windows, the same as the right side facade, but without blinds.

The rear facade is raised higher in the centre under a flat roof and contains a large two-light window and several smaller windows. The ground floor contains several outbuildings, some of which are recent. At upper floor level the gutter is broken through by a facade section rising higher with a horizontal termination. On either side of this the roof slopes are steeper and likewise provided with a flat roof. The ground plan layout is original. With regard to the interior and fixtures, the following components are particularly important: the stairs, the partition wall between the hall and the sitting room with leaded glass windows and the stained leaded glass windows in the extension on the street side, which were designed and executed by S. J. Pruisen at Delft. The sitting room furthermore contains fine projecting panelled doors, a wooden fireplace and original panelling.

Behind the villa stands the office with studio from 1918 which is erected on a rectangular ground plan under a thatched gabled roof with roof slopes of unequal gutter heights. This office falls outside the protection.

Valuation

The villa is of architectural historical importance as an intact example of an early 20th century residence in English cottage style and because of the decorative elements. Furthermore the property is of cultural historical value because of the residential history of J. Stuivinga, the designer of the house and of writer Anne de Vries. Finally the property has high ensemble value because of the integrity of the surroundings.
