Inleiding

Introduction

The former hunting lodge is presumed to have been built between 1844-1846. On a topographic map from 1847, a dwelling is already depicted on the triangular-shaped plot. The hunting ranger's residence was thus built much earlier than the country house Wulperhorst, which was built in 1858. The building was deliberately constructed close to the railway line. The railway line was laid out in 1843. The small building had its own private halt where one could alight upon request. Prince Hendrik visited the chalet on 26 November 1916. The room on the upper storey served as a space where one could dine after or before the hunt. Furthermore, on the upper storey there were a china closet and a room with a toilet. The hay loft was only accessible from outside. On the ground floor the stable and the hunting ranger's residence were housed. One could not access the upper storey via an internal staircase. For this one had to use a narrow stair which ran along the left side gable and led to the balcony. The present staircase is a reconstruction.

Description

A detached former HUNTING LODGE running parallel to the railway line Utrecht-Arnhem laid out in 1844, of two storeys on a rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof covered with dampened Dutch tiles. The gabled roof has a half-hipped end at the front gable. All gables are plastered white on the first storey, while the second storey is provided with rabbit-tail courses.

The front or east gable of the hunting ranger's residence has a wooden balcony on the second storey, which runs across the entire width of the gable and continues in part along both side gables. The U-shaped balcony rests on cut-out consoles and has a balustrade decorated with flat, baluster-like uprights. A second, but much smaller balcony is situated under the overhang of the half-hipped end and has the same detailing. The window arrangement of the front gable consists on the first storey of two arched double casement windows with shutters, between which a blindly arched arch field is visible. The second storey has two windows with sash windows, between which a double balcony door with fanlights is placed. In the ridge there is an arched composite window with a low double balcony door. The side lights are provided with cross glazing bars. On the gable corners, directly under the roof shield, a wrought-iron console is attached which is curved outwards at the ends.

The rear gable is entirely blind except for two small windows on the first storey.

The left side gable has a symmetrical layout with the former entrance to the dwelling placed on the central axis. To the left of this door is an arched three-light window with moulded uprights. On the right side is a recessed gable field which has the form of the previously described window. Once a false window was painted in this field to achieve symmetry in the gable. At present a small double casement window has been placed in the gable field. On the second storey there are three windows: two three-light windows between which, above the aforementioned entrance, a sash window is placed.

The right side gable has an asymmetrical window arrangement with the former, lightly arched stable entrance entirely on the left, now partially blocked and replaced by a simple slat door with fanlight. To the right of this is a small toilet window, a small room window, below which a cellar light is set and a recently inserted double garden door. On the first storey three windows are placed. At the far right under the overhang is a grille. This grille consists of elongated, horizontally placed slats and originally served as ventilation for the hay loft behind it.

The original ground plan layout no longer exists. The interior, with the exception of the tie beams in the ceiling in the former stable space, the small room and the cellar, has no original elements.

Valuation

The hunting lodge is of cultural-historical value because of its original function, and also of architectural-historical value because of chalet-style influences and building type. Also of ensemble value because of its location in the countryside, along the railway line at the country estate De Wulperhorst.

The hunting ranger's residence at Tiendweg 5b is presumed to have been built between 1860 and 1870. The choice to build the residence directly along the railway line was deliberate as the house formerly possessed a small platform, which Prince Hendrik used when he came to hunt on the estate.
