Omschrijving complexonderdeel 1

Description of complex component 1

A COUNTRY HOUSE situated parallel to the Laan van Beek en Royen on an approximately square ground plan, consisting of two storeys and a basement, under a hipped roof lined with Dutch tiles, composed of separate sections. The perimeter gutter line has segment-arch-like cutouts on the underside. Under the gutter a profiled cornice is affixed.

All facade sides are white-rendered with imitation joints drawn in. Virtually all arched sash windows have a profiled window frame on the top side and casements on the underside. Between the storeys a simple stringcourse is affixed.

The front facade of the country house, situated on the north-west side, has a symmetrical layout consisting of two corner risalits and a recessed central section. Herein on the central axis the main entrance is positioned, which is reached via a hardstone staircase. Above the arched entrance, at the level of the stringcourse, is located a suspended balcony. The tympanum cornice dates from 1953 and is therefore of subordinate significance for national monument protection. The risalits have one window axis and are enriched at the corners with pilaster strips in the first storey and pilasters with casement infill in the second storey. The rear facade is in terms of detailing consistent with the front facade and is four window axes wide with on the central axis a three-sided bay, in front of which a conservatory is built. On either side of the conservatory is a veranda which is now entirely closed in with windows. The lean-to roof of the veranda is supported by six slender cast iron columns. In the second storey the three-sided bay has a pilaster at each corner. The bay has above the roof line received an extra storey under a tent roof, which projects above the ridge height of the composed hipped roof.

The right side facade now has four window axes, of which the central axis has received a slight projection. Originally the facade section to the right of the projection had one window axis (see left side facade). The two new windows here have no casements on the underside.

The left side facade is in terms of facade layout consistent with the right side facade. A later extension is placed under a flat roof against the facade and there is a sunken terrace situated for the purpose of the canteen which is laid out in the basement. Both are of subordinate significance for national monument protection. The interior has been partly adapted over the years. The H-shaped hall is provided with rich stucco-work ornaments. The former billiard room on the left side of the hall and the right room are in original condition with wainscoting. In both rooms a fireplace is placed with blue and white tiles, pilasters with volute capitals, above which consoles are placed that support a wooden fireboard or cornice. Of importance throughout the whole house are the sash shutters for insulation purposes which can be slid away one-sidedly into the walls and can be concealed with wooden flaps so that they are hidden from view. The garden room with sliding doors towards the terrace is provided with stucco work in empire style. The basement has practically received an entirely different function. The space under the hall is executed with ribless cross vaults. Furthermore, the original trough vaults are still present.

Valuation of complex component 1

Of architectural-historical value as an example of a reasonably well-preserved country house type and also by virtue of the detailing in the exterior and the material use (cast iron) in the conservatory and veranda. Also of ensemble value as a component of the country estate Pavia in conjunction with the existing outbuildings (dovecote and bridge) and the landscaped park.
