PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. lanes b. small park c. vegetable garden d. small wood e. coppice wood with sight-line axis f. pasture and orchards g. pasture.

The layout of the historic country estate Wolfrath consists of a formally structured arrangement originating from the early 18th century with double moats, adjoining a small landscape arrangement from the early 19th century, which also lies within the moats, with outside the moats a transverse lane perpendicular to the axis of the house (old carriage drive with old avenue planting of lime trees), to the SE of the moated estate a pasture with 'grand canal' on the axis of the moated estate and adjacent to this last-mentioned pasture a well-preserved 18th-century coppice wood (place name: Sterrebos) with centrally a central lane with oak trees (sight-line axis) oriented on the axis of the 'grand canal'. This early 18th-century structure was extended in the 19th century in formal style through the formalisation of the layout of the Pasveld, by surrounding it with straight lanes. This extension took place in various stages whenever gradual land acquisition on this side of the complex by the Kerens family, owners of Wolfrath in the 19th century, made this possible. Thus between 1810 and 1819 parallel to the old carriage drive to the SW thereof the Koestraat (avenue planting with lime trees) could be laid out (compare the pre-cadastral map 1810-1815 and the Cadastral Minute Plan 1819). The boundary of the Kerens family's property on the SE side of open ground between these two lanes (the Pasveld), which lies somewhat to the NW of the present carriage drive, was marked by a row of oak trees. The six oaks in the Pasveld recall this old boundary marking. Between 1842 and 1891 (see the topographical military maps from these years) the lane from Holtum to Susteren was planted, whereby the field on the north side was closed off by a lime tree planting (now a few rows of limes, on the west side interrupted by the motorway Eindhoven-Maastricht laid out in the 1960s). Renewed land acquisition by the Kerens family made it possible in the last-mentioned period to lay out the new carriage drive on the axis of the house (lime tree planting). Thus in the 19th century there arose in phases the pasture surrounded by lime-tree avenues and carriage drive, which, despite the unfortunate location of the former lane from Holtum to Susteren, has since had its experiential value characterised by a formally laid-out pasture surrounded by avenue trees (partly with orchard), which was ultimately interwoven with the older structure of the Wolfrath layout. This formal structure of the layout around Kasteel Wolfrath created in the 18th and 19th centuries distinguishes itself from the clearance structure of the surrounding landscape.

re a.: there are three lanes; from the bridge (see below under 4) to the gate building runs a lime-tree avenue, the Kleinelaan, 19th century, to the southwest; before the large factory complex was built the lane ended on the road from Holtum to Nieuwstadt; that road, Pasveld, formerly called Koestraat, has been cut off by the factory complex and is actually now via a right-angled bend the extension of the lane; the lane has gravel surfacing. The old official carriage drive, 18th century or older, stands perpendicular to the already-mentioned lane and ends in a northwesterly direction on the Holtummerweg; also lime trees, planted in square configuration, and gravel surfacing; at beginning and end respectively two conical bollards. The third lane, 19th century, begins directly at the bridge perpendicular to the first lane and runs via a right-angled bend along the northwest side of the outer moat in a northeasterly direction towards the Holtummerweg; oak planting; no surfacing but a grass verge; is used only for walking.

re b.: to the northeast and northwest of the castle island lies between inner and outer moat a small park in landscape style, early 19th century, with grass fields, in which old solitary trees and a winding pergola of hornbeam; further a circular path through the pergola and over a small mound in the north corner of the small park. The southeast side of the inner moat is so broad that it can be called a pond; in it lies a round islet.

re c.: the vegetable garden lies in the southern corner of the outer moat directly next to the southeast wing of the gate building.

re d.: directly to the west of the west corner of the outer moat lies a small walk-through wood, 19th century late, bounded by the two lime-tree lanes, the Venkebeek and the outer moat; faintly a path structure can still be recognised; there is mixed deciduous woodland.

re e.: in the east corner of the complex lies the so-called Sterrebos, a more or less square plot with many old oaks as standards from alder coppice; formerly exploited as coppice wood; broad central axis with grass growth and oaks as avenue planting, oriented towards the castle.

re f.: to the south of the wood, bounded by the Holtummerweg, the carriage drive and the brook lies a plot of pasture (partly with orchard), which is embedded in a formal structure of lime-tree avenues created in the 19th century and which can also serve to keep this structure visible and experiential. In the east corner lie orchards on either side of the 'grand canal'.

re g: to the northeast of the old carriage drive there has long been a pasture which in the composition of the park represents a major cultural-historical value because of the deliberately created contrast effect with the old carriage drive and the walk-through wood bounded by the Venkebeek. The profile of the lane and the landscape edge of this wood and with it the historical experiential value of these park sections are made visible by the open space of this pasture. Vice versa the pasture represents, seen from the deliberately created enclosed spaces of the old carriage drive and the enclosed walk-through wood, as a contrasting open green space a major deliberately created spatial and compositional experiential value.

Valuation

PARK LAYOUT of general importance

- because of its age

- because of the virtually undisturbed 18th-century formal structure

- because of the rarity value of this structure, in particular of the old carriage drive, the layout of the moats, the 'grand canal' and the well-preserved coppice wood with sight-line avenue

- because of the extension of the 18th-century formal structure created in phases over the course of the nineteenth century

- because of the visual-landscape value

- because of the historical visual-landscape value.
