Omschrijving

Description

The CHAPEL is a small hall church erected in red brick under a gabled roof with slates in Dutch bond. On the east side the chapel is closed off by a choir with a three-sided apse. On the north side of it an eight-sided stepped turret with spire, on the south side a rectangular extension under a gabled roof. In the middle of the ridge a roof turret with a tall narrow spire and bell.

The facades are articulated by buttresses and stained glass pointed-arch windows with Gothic sandstone tracery. On the roof small roof dormers and cast-iron cross-flowers are placed.

The side facades are three bays wide. In the front facade a flush-shutting double hinged door in a sandstone moulding is placed under a large pointed-arch window. On either side of the window small sandstone three-lobed arches, above them spandrels under pointed arches and small narrow windows.

The interior of the chapel is largely in its original state. Among other things the following have been preserved: the polychrome paintings in the vaults and on the walls, the tile floor, the simple stained glass windows, the wooden polychrome altar and the natural stone sculptures.

Valuation

The chapel is of general cultural, architectural history and urban planning importance:

- as an exponent of the building boom of Catholic buildings after the restoration of the Papal hierarchy in 1853

- because of the Neo-Gothic building style

- because of the functional and spatial relationship with the other buildings and objects on the cemetery

- because of the intactness of the interior and exterior

- because of the rarity of polychrome paintings of such high quality
