Inleiding

Cuypers.

Description
Introduction
The Schaepman Monument was erected in 1908 according to a design by P.J.H. Cuypers as a memorial to Dr. H.J.A.M. Schaepman, professor, editor, politician, writer and poet (1844-1903). A competition had been announced in which Cuypers sat on the jury. When the jury could not reach a decision among the entries, Cuypers himself was commissioned to make a design. In the Cuypers archive there is no design of the monument that now stands. However, another design for a Schaepman Monument is present under the motto 'Defunctis-ad-huc-ioquitur'. Also in the archive is a specification concerning the laying of the foundation and the placement of two benches.
Schaepman began his career at the seminary which has since been demolished and stood behind the monument. First he studied at this seminary, returning there in 1870 as a professor. From 1872 he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper De Tijd. After 1880 Schaepman gained national prominence as a member of parliament of the Roman Catholic party, where he devoted himself in particular to the school controversy and suffrage controversy. With regard to the latter Schaepman was an advocate of an expansion of voting rights. He succeeded in achieving this together with A. Kuyper of the Anti-Revolutionary party in 1887. In the school controversy too, he managed to achieve more generous subsidies for private (Catholic and Christian) schools in the revision of the School Act. As a poet he is not considered original in critical reviews, because he would use too much rhetoric in his poems. His prose, on the other hand, is regarded as clear and lively.
Description
A MEMORIAL BUILDING located along the Hoofdstraat executed in Neo-Gothic style, consisting of a hexagonal superstructure placed on a hexagonal base constructed of rusticated blocks. On each corner of the superstructure a pinnacle is placed, crowned by a gable, upon which a finial is set. The shaft of the pinnacle has a chamfered front face which ends in a finial. Above the finial the shaft projects and takes on a rectangular form with rounded corners. Above this is the aforementioned gable.
Each gable is provided with a casement with three-lobed termination in which a symbol is engraved relating to Fides (faithfulness) represented by a cross with the Greek letters Alpha and Omega, Justitia (justice) represented by the scales with sword, Charitas (charity) represented by the Madonna with the Child Jesus, Fortitudo (strength/bravery) represented by a Doric column, Sapientia (wisdom) represented by the Holy Spirit (dove) and Perseverantia (perseverance), of which the symbolic representation is unclear. Between the pinnacles are pointed-arch fields with gable and finial as crowning, in which reliefs are applied depicting important moments in the life of Schaepman. Below these reliefs are tableaus in which a text is engraved relating to the relief above. The reliefs depict the following (starting from the street side clockwise): 1- Schaepman as a blessing priest 2- Schaepman as an orator 3- Schaepman as a professor, lecturing to a group of seminary students 4- Schaepman as a priest accompanied by two praying acolytes 5- Schaepman as a scholar seated in his library 6- Schaepman as a politician
The tableaus have the following texts. The numbers refer to the reliefs above. The dotted parts in the texts indicate words that are no longer legible.
to (1): 'Dr. Herman Joan Aloysius Maria Schaepman born at Tubbergen on 2 March 1844 died in Rome on 21 January 1903 and buried there in the Campo Santo dei Tedeschi'
to (2): 'Where the struggle for truth right and truth is undertaken where steadfast manly resistance is demanded where bold forward battle is proclaimed there his name is a watchword and a motto'
to (3): 'History is the handmaid of God and her deeds form a cloud of witnesses around the infallible truths laid by God in the foundation of history. Those deeds surround faith like a broad court retinue clothed in white robes singing the fate of the King exalting high its truth'
to (4): The text on this tableau is largely illegible as a result of erosion:
He has found his God monument of his striving and struggling his times found in the catacombs To her he has...... of the son...... the prince and the strength of the man
to (5): 'To serve is the nature ...... with unbreakable princely staff it is the full power possessed that the Creator gave the creature it is like the eagle ascending upward with gaze directed on high to catch the full ray of the golden sunlight'
to (6): 'He loved his fatherland with a love that surpassed all things that deemed no sacrifice too great, no effort too mighty with a love that made him forget all everything neglect contempt oblivion rejection'
Above all pointed-arch fields is a triangular field crowned by a finial. The filling of the triangular field consists inter alia of a circular recess in which symbols are represented which also relate to the life of Schaepman. Above (1) is a coat of arms with a priest's hat visible, above (2) a crowned monogram with Schaepman's initials, above (3) the letter A, above (4) a richly decorated cross, above (5) in a four-lobed form a small letter Û.
The monument is crowned by a statue representing St. George slaying the dragon, symbol of the fighting Christian who defends the church against evil (the dragon). This statue stands on a richly decorated base consisting of casements with three-lobes, small pinnacles with crockets, finials and decorated mouldings.
Valuation
The Schaepman Monument is of cultural-historical value because of Schaepman's great fame and influence as a politician at the end of the 19th century and as the last tangible testimony to the disappeared seminary, as well as of architectural-historical value as an example of a building type in richly detailed Neo-Gothic style. Also of importance as a component in the oeuvre of architect P.J.H. Cuypers.
