Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former military OBSERVATION POST, nicknamed the Dome, built around 1942 on the orders of the German occupier as part of the Atlantikwall, the coastal defence line laid out between North Norway and South France. The observation post, which consists of an above-ground hexagonal dome and two underground rooms, lies 37 metres above sea level on one of the highest dunes in the area and served to signal an attack from the landward side. The bunker had only the function of a lookout post and was not resistant to bombardment or shelling. Originally the dome, which was painted in camouflage colours, was more deeply buried in the dune.
The observation post was part of the so-called Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk-Noordwijk, one of the defensive units of the Atlantikwall in the Netherlands. The terrain of Katwijk-Noordwijk covered approximately 10 by 5 kilometres and included an airfield (Valkenburg), two coastal batteries and a heavy anti-aircraft battery. On the seaward side the boulevards of the villages of Katwijk and Noordwijk were screened with two-metre-high anti-tank walls while on the landward side numerous obstacles were constructed or dug. In the dune areas concrete anti-tank walls and dragon's-teeth obstacles formed the defence line, while in the polder land existing watercourses and the Oude Rijn were fitted out as a continuous wet anti-tank obstacle. The number of heavy bunkers was 98, mainly components of the coastal and anti-aircraft batteries.
The observation post is clearly recognisable in the dune area of Katwijk and nowadays functions as a viewpoint in the nature reserve 'Hollands Duin' between Katwijk aan Zee and The Hague.
Description
The observation post consists above ground of a hexagonal dome and below ground of a bunker in which two habitation rooms are housed. The walls of the underground bunker and the dome are constructed of 65 cm thick masonry rendered above ground. The underground rooms each measure 3 x 3.80 metres and have light shafts on the north and south sides. There is a covered access section with two entrances. The dome is closed off by a cantilever hexagonal 50 cm thick concrete slab, fitted with reinforcement bars for attaching camouflage nets. Beneath the concrete slab there are low, horizontal rectangular openings.
Valuation
The observation post is of general importance due to military-historical and typological values as a strategically situated historical-functional component of the Atlantikwall and as a representative example of German bunker construction from the Second World War. The observation post is reasonably intact in its main form, material use and detailing. The observation post also has important situational values due to the spatial and historical-functional relationship with the remaining fragments of the Atlantikwall in the Dutch coastal area and because of its prominent positioning on one of the highest dune tops in the dune area of Katwijk.
